So has anyone used one of these baddies? I have a hard time believing that this thing that does 10D10 damage is a CR7.

Is that a mistake or what?

Am I a sissy? cant I take down a Remorhaz?

It has weapon destruction, impr Grab, swallow whole, does 10D10 to the person swallowed, and thats after they take a boat load of damage from the bite. There almost no way the PC can make the Grapple check against a creature the size of the Remorahz.

So what, my friends, is up with that?

Proof that CR isn't an infallable scientific tool expertly designed to perfectly match your PC's against any given monster?

there are multipe threads on this I started one of them. General answer seems to be that the CR assumes the mosnter is out in the open and at some range. Then the players can use ranged weapons, fly etc to destroy it without any danger to themselves.

Personally It hink its CR s still out of whack fo 2 reasons 1 its standard operating procedure should be functioned into its CR(ambush) despite various peoples needless explanations about the diff between EL and CR and 2 the damage done is so obscene it has a good chance to take out creaures of 7th level range in one hit. And yes I supose you could say that losing 1 out of 4 of the players is using 25% of your resources but that's lame.

What Shard said.

The CR system is a good start, but it should incorporate a bit more information about how circumstances can change the effective Encounter Level.

A single Remorhaz attacking four 7th level PCs from ambush is very likely to kill at least one or more PCs, and has a decent chance of TPKing. But it would not be too tough to kill or avoid if the party is forewarned. Obviously "CR 7" doesn't quite tell the whole picture.

Basically, the entire CR system is bogus and arbitrary. Maybe I'll start a topic about this.

[saracsm]Good idea! I wonder why such a thing has never been debated before![/sarcasm]

I think its CR is reasonable, given that once you can get any kind of mobility (flight, etc) you can kill it easily. Factor in situational difficulty to the xp award, though; cause it could easily kill a 7th level pc.

Thanks for the replies, this killed 2 characters in my last game, an NPC and a PC. I kept rereading the stomach damage a round woundering why they had bothered to put the stomach AC and HP in there since no ones going to live long enough to get a chance to cut their way out!

On comparison to other swallowing creatures(pornstars excluded) which averaged D8 damage a round, they seem WAY off the mark.

Truthfully the only way this creature fits into a CR7 is if the PLAYERS are familiar with it. I figured they would wipe it out with arrows in a few rounds but they didnt realize the Weapon destroying body heat until they went up and hit it. SWALLOW.

Which reminds me, shouldnt creatures with the HEAT special quality have an Aura of damage from heat? just a D6 or something that clues them into "this things hotter than hell"

Does anyone know if Pheonix or Salamanders that have fire damaging auras also have the weapon destruction quality?

It seems poorly worked out. But I suppose everything needs a little tweaking!

PS- I had my NPC run up to hit it, to show the party that it could melt weapons but the damn thing swallowed her before she could even hit it!
