Yep, I remember reading that. They fired Romero for not following the game close enough, then they hire the current guy who changed it from a virus like the flu to a computer virus.
No, it's not a computer virus. It's still a disease-like virus which, after infecting people, turns them into flesh-eating zombies. The computer aspect has to do with The Red Queen, who is the semi-sentient central computer for the underground lab. It handles security systems, networks, and containment procedures. It hasn't been verified yet, but most of the material seems to suggest that, after the initial exposure is caused by human error, The Red Queen, for some reason, actually tries to spread the virus. It's meant to be a prequel of sorts to the games. The original story for Resident Evil 0 (the video game prequel, which is currently in development) did have a central computer system trying to spread the virus. I'm glad that they decided to go with a different script, since they were originally planning on simply turning Resident Evil 1 into movie form, complete with the same story and characters.
And Romero wasn't fired because he wouldn't follow the video game closely enough. He was fired because he tried to turn it into another "Night of the Living Dead/Dawn of the Dead/Day of the Dead." All of those movies contain major political and social commentary, as well as dark humor, and the executives didn't want that in their film. Plus, they wanted the zombies to be a part, not the focus, of the movie, while Romero's scripts tended to focus on them, introducing speaking zombie characters and relating most of the important events to the zombies. That would have limited the appeal of the movie to an even smaller audience, which leads to smaller revenues for the studio. It seems the studio suits didn't understand what they were getting when they decided to hire George Romero. He wasn't what they wanted, and there were signs pointing towards that from the beginning, so it wasn't a big surprise when they finally fired him.
But worry not, Romero fans. He's currently in talks to do a 4th "Living Dead" film (Twilight of the Dead), as well as a "Living Dead" TV series.
