Resident Evil:The Movie

Umm, in the Fifth Element, she pulled a Bruce Lee "come and get me" move, promptly got her butt kicked, and spent a large part of the last half hour or so of the picture like a damp washrag, being carried around by Bruce Willis.
Hmm..we're thinking of different movies. The Fifth Element I sawhad her chazracter punching through unbreakable glass, surviving falls off a tall building to crash through the roof into a flying cab, and beating up large numbers of big ugly brutes. She did get into trouble when the bad guy showed up unexpectedly with a gun though.;)

Definitely a weird movie. Not sure I'd call it good, but I was entertained by it.

Yep, I remember reading that. They fired Romero for not following the game close enough, then they hire the current guy who changed it from a virus like the flu to a computer virus.

No, it's not a computer virus. It's still a disease-like virus which, after infecting people, turns them into flesh-eating zombies. The computer aspect has to do with The Red Queen, who is the semi-sentient central computer for the underground lab. It handles security systems, networks, and containment procedures. It hasn't been verified yet, but most of the material seems to suggest that, after the initial exposure is caused by human error, The Red Queen, for some reason, actually tries to spread the virus. It's meant to be a prequel of sorts to the games. The original story for Resident Evil 0 (the video game prequel, which is currently in development) did have a central computer system trying to spread the virus. I'm glad that they decided to go with a different script, since they were originally planning on simply turning Resident Evil 1 into movie form, complete with the same story and characters.

And Romero wasn't fired because he wouldn't follow the video game closely enough. He was fired because he tried to turn it into another "Night of the Living Dead/Dawn of the Dead/Day of the Dead." All of those movies contain major political and social commentary, as well as dark humor, and the executives didn't want that in their film. Plus, they wanted the zombies to be a part, not the focus, of the movie, while Romero's scripts tended to focus on them, introducing speaking zombie characters and relating most of the important events to the zombies. That would have limited the appeal of the movie to an even smaller audience, which leads to smaller revenues for the studio. It seems the studio suits didn't understand what they were getting when they decided to hire George Romero. He wasn't what they wanted, and there were signs pointing towards that from the beginning, so it wasn't a big surprise when they finally fired him.

But worry not, Romero fans. He's currently in talks to do a 4th "Living Dead" film (Twilight of the Dead), as well as a "Living Dead" TV series.

re: The Fifth Element - Yeah, she did some tough things like you mention, but ended up wimping out just when things got hot and heavy, doing her impression of Sharon Stone od'ing on painkillers in Casino. Besides, she was killed just as she was coming to Earth - you'd think those duckheaded aliens (no typo ;) ) would have advanced technologically in the centuries between the prolog and the bulk of the movie, so that their ship wouldn't get destroyed out of hand by those other aliens. Or maybe they did, and sent the hope of mankind out in a beater that was easy to destroy. Plus, did you notice that she really didn't do any of the important stuff in the movie?

Believe me, I wanted to like this movie, and walked out totally repulsed. I could go minute by minute and tell what I disliked. Usually I'm a forgiving moviegoer, and I love scifi and bad movies, but this movie surprised me with how much I disliked it. I disliked it at the subatomic level. Every single alternate me that exists in every single parallel universe is united in dislike for this movie. My dislike of it is so intense, it has a gravitational field. I could not have liked this movie less if I had personally witnessed it kill my mother.

OK, so some slight hyperbole.

But I really disliked it.

I'm getting the vague sense that you might not have liked this movie, or am I totally off base here?:D
Anyway I rather liked it in an offbeat sort of way. Definetly not the movie of the year or even month but enjoyable.

Hmm.... Tight outfitted babes running up the walls doing high kicks in a way that lead the thoughts back to matrix. A group of people doing their best 'we pretend to be zombies' act.

Still. I loved the game (Only played RE2) because of the mood. I replayed it just for the mood. Can the movie do that I consider it a success.

Might be a good trash movie, like "Species" or "Relic".

Fifth Element:
It's one of my fav movies, too. They way it is edited, and the inherent humour in the story certainly elevates it above many other fantasy/sci-fi movies.

It's true that she doesn't really DO the important things, but hey - she's a tool! Just like the four stones. She's not really supposed to defeat baddies or the like, she just exists to emit that lightbeam at the end of the movie.
It's not a Ripley-type role, but it's a better women's role than most action flicks have, as well.
