Resisting saving throws while unconscious

Yes, I was sure someone would point that out. As I said - "taken together."

Taken together - as in when you take all of the bits and pieces that have to do with being helpless and Reflex saves. It does not definitively say "no save" anywhere, but it's pretty clear when you look at everything all together.

i think a character who is asleep should get a save
held, unconcious, dying...ok, maybe not...
but asleep?
have you ever startled someone into waking up?
isn't that a reflex?
whether or not they know what is going on, the body has some almost preternatural awareness (especially present in heroes i would think, and especially if there is magic involved) that although their dexterity would be terrible, they would reflexively jerk away from danger (reflex save with an effective dex of 0 or with no bonus, depending on what kind of DM you are)

I understand your point of view, but in D&D terms "bound, held, sleeping, paralyzed, or unconscious" all amount to the same condition - "helpless." Either they'd all get a Reflex save, or none.

I'd be tempted to give one to a sleeping character, too, but that'd be a house rule.

On the other hand, I'd definately let the character who just survived a full fireball blast while sleeping to automatically wake up. Startled awake, in spades! :)

DC0 Wilderness Lore check. "Is it just me, or did it get really hot in here all of a sudden?" :)

Sad part is you usually take 0 when asleep.... so there are character who would fail the check (8 or less in the ability score).

No brainer to tell the player his character was just blasted with extreme heat and he is now very awake.
