Resurrection and Elemental Savant

First Post
I just read through the latest FAQ.

In it, it states that outsiders and elementals can not be brought back from the dead by Resurrection. A specific exception is given for Monks because they started as mortal.

At 10th level in the Elemental Savant PrC, the character changes to an Elemental type. Similiarly, the Acolyte of the Skin, Alienist, and Fatespinner become outsiders.

Originally, I thought that Resurrection would work on these since nothing in the spell text prevented it.

Given the FAQ, would any of these PrC still be able to be raised from the dead by Resurrection? Just like the Monk, they would have started out as a mortal creature.

Under the core rules, I would say yes - they get the same exception as monks to maintain consistency.

IMC - that rule works very differently

Honestly, it is very much a cosmology dependent thing.

By a strict reading of the rules, elemental savants, fatespinners, acolytes of the skin, contemplatives et al cannot be resurrected because they're outsiders. These characters aren't monks, so the text for monks doesn't apply. However, it seems quite clear that the intent is for characters who transcend to be resurrectable, regardless of what class they are. It also looks like the relevant text in the PrC writeups was cut-and-pasted from the monk description. Since the new monk writeup in the 2nd printing PHB allows monks to be resurrected, I'd assume it's meant to apply to these PrCs as well.

I think it should be alloud. I think resurection has become such a common thing that having a character give that up would severely hurt them especially at such a high level.

I think it's more important to decide how this would be dealt in your own game, though. In most games I can see this being okay.

FRCS has a concept called 'native outsider'. Basically the above and things like Tieflings that are born and live on the prime can be raised/resurrected and can't be banished to some random plane.

I think the concept of the native outsider covers this situation nicely. I would also extend it to include the monk. This makes everything more elegant so instead of Monks are the exception to rule X you can say any outsider who started as a mortal or is born on the prime material plane is a native outsider and as such can be ressurected.

So the Elemental Savant would be a Native Elemental?

All of the other examples change the type to Outsider. Only the ES changes it to Elemental.

Manual of the Planes has a spell that can raise outsiders and elementals, so just have your cleric friend pray for that when needed and to heck with wondering if the PHB spells work or not. :)

In fact, you don't even need that spell or the FRCS notion of "native outsider", it is in the core rules. An outsider or elemental can be banished when he's not on his native plane (hence the native outsiders that can not be banished from the material plane, since the material plane is their home plane) and can be raised by Raise Dead, Resurrection or True Resurrection if the spell is cast on the outsider/elemental's home plane (hence the native outsider can be raised on the prime material plane since it's his home plane).
