Can someone point me to, or explain, the rules of what it means to loose a level (after applying ressurection; no negative levels from undead).

Thx!

You lose a level. You reverse all the changes you made at the last level up - so that Barbarian-10 dropping to a Barbarian-9 loses the d12 hit die from that last level (if he rolled a 6 his d12, it reduces his HP by 6+His Con Bonus); he loses those 4+Int (5+Int, if human) skill points that he just gained. His base attack bonus drops from +10/+5 to +9/+4; his base saves drop from +7/+3/+3 to +6/+3/+3; he loses the DR 2/- he just picked up; had he been dropping from 12th to 11th or similar, he would also lose the stat gain and feat he'd just gotten. His XP is set to midway between 9th and 10th.

Thx for your answer!
Where can I read that up? I have all the 3 core books, but can't find it (so far...still looking).

ah ok found it, thx!
However, one point is not clear for me: "loose one HD". Is the character loosing the exact hitdice throw he made when he changed level, and does he get the same hitdice roll back when he reaces the level again or not?
(==>Can it be abused to "correct" bad hitdice rolls)

I think it could theoretically be "abused", but losing a level is pretty harsh in the first place, so getting a few extra hit points out of it doesn't really help you that much.

If your group plays long session and manages to level often (maybe in fact once per session), you might consider an easier alternative: Just apply a negative level on the character (see negative levels for all details, but it basically means -5 hp, lose one (or two?) highest level spell, and -1 to all attacks, checks and saves). Recalculating everything can be a pain in the ass if this has to be done in the middle of a session.

Hmm, so I would be allowed to choose a *different* class (i.e. bard instead of fighter) if I regain my level, different from what I choose before?

Yes - it's not treated as 'regaining' a level, so much as gaining a new level. There is no difference, aside from the fact that you're likely a level behind the rest of the party.

I have actually seen a pc die, lose a level, gain a new level and choose to take a different class because of the death experience (took cleric levels after that til she died).
