Retiring Dice?

Some of my friends retire their dice after they do something fantastic with it as a 'reward'. Me? I may get new dice and decide to use those as opposed to the old ones, but I don't retire them. Others?

I still have- and go out of my way to use- an old-skool, almost spherical d20 from my 2e Gamma World boxed set that I got in the early 80's.

Retire them? That's like retiring a superhero! Sometimes dice sit in the bottom of the box for a time, but they always return as guest stars eventually.

Honestly there have been many times when I tried to leave the old dice sitting on my bookshelves catching dust. Then I would go out and buy some new fancy ones with marble textures or even metal dice....But it doesnt go more than 3 or 4 game sessions before I switch back to my old 12+ year old dice. I don't know why but they give me a "better feeling" when I play. I remember the things I did with them and *swoosh* they are back in action and the new shiny dice end up on the shelf..Can't remember how many times I tried to retire the old dice but they just keep coming back :D

i mix them up.

cuz after rolling some of my old faithful so many times... i could almost guarantee what i wanted to roll.

so to keep things random i mix my dice up.

and try not to use the same ones twice.

but i never retire them.

i still have dice from my first game.

I still have every die I've ever purchased, with the exception of one set I traded for another complete set, or in the case of my first d20 (a purple Gamescience High Impact Razoredge) which I gave to a friend upon graduating college and moving away. I'm more than pleased to brag that I've never lost a single die. One of my players leaves dice behind like bread crumbs to find his way home...I have dozens of his dice that he just shrugs and says "At least this way I know where they are."

I haven't "retired" my older ones, I have them in "reserve" in a seperate box, much like relief pitchers. If I go through ALL of my starters (I think I have 11 d20's just to cover me... including one cheat dice for when I want to mess with the DM's head), I can tap into the box and bring out ol' Saftery Hazard Orange or Bland Gray...

Those were the days...

What are 'bad' dice? Have they suffered some damage so they roll on one side more than another? I've never understood superstition when it comes to dice.
