Retiring Dice?

Retired dice are like Michael Jordan

I too have "retired" dice. In fact, I used the same set of christmas-colored dice (a gem red set w/white numerals and a gem green set w/white numerals) which I stored in al old tin Sucrets (think Altoids) box for 16 years! It was with a heavy heart I retired them when they didn't seem to have their mojo any more. I think they had just lived a long good life and needed to go.

So I put them away and at Gen Con 2003 I purchased an identically colored set, not for superstitious reasons (at least that is what I tell myself), but for nostalgic ones. You see they were those mini-dice.

Anyway they picked up where the other dice left off, but I found that I just missed the feel and confidence I had in the old dice.

Six months later, I brought the old ones to the gaming table once again. Side by side with the minis. My long-time DM was the one who dubbed the minis "children of the dice" and oddly enough the older dice seemed to perform better. Now, they only get used in the critical situations. The minis fill in the rest of the time.

Wierd I know, but hey, I guess the dice have memories attached, just like anything else can have the same nostalgic impact.
