I believe the double light sabers showed up in the books long before the Phantom Menace...

I seem to remember someone telling me about one of the characters having a saber with multiple settings... one of them being double sided.

Two-bladed double swords (double axes, etc.) were one of the stupidest things 3E introduced, and I was hoping they'd never return. I'm not too upset though, since they are in a supplement rather than the main rulebooks. This is all optional stuff, so why sweat it?

Exar Kun apparently used a double sided lightsaber. But I can't remember if he was introduced prior to Phantom Menace.

Well I never read any of the Starwars books, but the person who told me about the double saber thing, told me around ummm 93ish? So either it was before PM or he had an imagination similar to Lucas???
