My only hangup with the F/W is... I think if you cast a spell within reach of an enemy they get an Opportunity Attack, right? Or, am I reading the rules wrong.

If you cast a spell that is Ranged you attack with disadvantage if you are within the reach of a non-incapacitated foe.

AKAIK the only way to incur an AoO is by moving outside a foe's threat range without Disengaging.

Just avoided ranged attack spells so you are not at disadvantage to attack. Shocking grasp, Poison spray and acid splash are all good cantrips in this regard plus most standard spells
