Reupholstering a Car...

Does anyone have any idea how much it might cost to get a car reupholstered? I'm not looking for anything real specific here, just general ballpark figures for putting new fabric on the seats of a typical sedan so I now what to expect.

No Idea on the costs, but unless nasty orange powder is falling off the car ceiling, I'd say grab a roll of duct tape.

Instructions
Difficulty: Easy

Finding a Shop
Step 1:
Ask your car dealer to recommend upholstery shops. Car dealers often have the interiors of the cars they offer reupholstered.

Step 2:
Ask car audio specialty shops to recommend an upholstery shop. The specialty car audio shops often farm out the upholstery work to specialists, so they often know the best upholstery shops in the area.

Step 3:
Attend car shows and ask the owners of show cars to recommend an upholstery shop. Check out the upholstery in their cars, especially the finished edges.

Step 4:
Call the shops and find out what kind of upholstery work they do. Is it the type of work you want done on your car?

Step 5:
Choose two or three shops to investigate.

At the Shop
Step 1:
See whether the shop has a variety of materials to choose from.

Step 2:
Discuss your budget with the sales representative. What you're willing to pay will influence the type of material used in the upholstery work. Materials can cost from $6 a yard up to $75 a yard.

Step 3:
Ask to see photographs of the shop's work. Ask the sales representative to give you a detailed explanation of the process using the photos.

Step 4:
Try to watch work being done. Check the finished edges, the finished product. Is the upholstery secured well?

Step 5:
Choose the shop with which you are most comfortable.

Yeah... I saw that page too... I called up my favorite mechanic and got his recommendation. He said the guys he uses are very good, and have decent prices. The last time he used them, they replaced the leather on his driver seat and it cost him ~$800. Yow.

That answered my question... There's a used car I was looking at, a very nice car at a good price, but the leather upholstery is all chewed up. I was trying to figure out whether or not it would be worth buying the car and replacing the upholstery. Unfortunately, it's looking like it'd cost almost as much as what I'd pay for the car.

That "good price" is most likely because of the upholstery being chewed up. It sounds like you found a good deal, as long as the car runs and can pass emissions*, the rest means squat. Duct tape and tie-on seat cushions will solve the rest of your problems.
