Give me an idea of how much he is willing to spend, or how much you will allow him to spend ;), and I'll spit something out for ya'.

You sound like you're in the business of selling used rings! :p
Just slightly cursed, special price for you my friend! How much gold do you carry?

A use-activated protection from evil amulet would cost 2,000 gp by the book, and suppress all attempts at mind control. Hold person is a mind-affecting, compulsion spell, and would fit the bill. It would only work against evil creatures, but that probably wouldn't be a major drawback.

Mind you, a use-activated prot. evil item should probably cost more like 10,000 gp IMO.

Cheaper Anti-Hold Person

I think the goal is to come up with something cheaper than 40k. If you base it off a counter spelled Hold Person the cost would be:

3 (caster level) * 2 (spell level) * 2000, 0r 12000 gp.

This would be a use activated ring that would keep the wearer from being held by the Hold Person spell, but not by any other spell or effect.

Seller: This ring protects against Hold Person.

Buyer: Oooh.

Seller: The ring is cursed.

Buyer: D'oh!

Seller: But it comes with a free frogurt!

Buyer: Oooh!

Seller: The frogurt is also cursed.

Buyer: D'oh!

Seller: The frogurt comes with a free topping.

Buyer: Oooh!

Seller: The topping contains polysaccarhides.

Buyer: Uh?

Seller: Thats bad.

Buyer: Oh just give me the stupid ring!

What about the caster level check involved with a counterspell? This magic item would have to all-but guarantee a successful counterspell check. Are you sure 12,000 gp is enough?

Re: Re: Cheaper Anti-Hold Person

There is no caster level check if you counter a spell with itself, only if you use Dispell Magic do you need to worry about a caster level check.

Sorry. I brainfarted while reading your post. For some reason I was thinking of Dispel Magic. Doh!

Protection from Evil doesn't work against Hold Person. From the DnD FAQ, page 48:
"The second function of the protection from evil spell blocks any attempt to possess the warded creature or to exercise mental control over the creature. What, exactly, counts as mental control?
Mental control includes all spells of the school of Enchantment that have the Charm subschool, such as animal friendship, charm person, and charm monster. It also includes some Enchantment spells of the Compulsion subschool if those spells grant the caster ongoing control over the subject; such spells include dominate person and dominate monster. Compulsions that merely dictate the subject's action at the time the spell takes effect are not blocked. Such spells include command, hold person, geas/quest, hypnotism, insanity, Otto's irresistible dance, random action, suggestion, and zone of truth."

Eh. This sort of handwaving is exactly why I gave up on 2E.

Well, one of the reasons I gave up on 2E.
