Eh. This sort of handwaving is exactly why I gave up on 2E.

Well, one of the reasons I gave up on 2E.

It's a ruling from the Sage, after all. It's not like he's never done that before...

I tend to examine the Sage's rulings instead of automatically accepting them as correct. But in this case, I think it makes sense. A first level spell shouldn't protect you from all mind-affecting spells. That's what spells like Mind Blank are for... and Mind Blank is an 8th level spell.

And the mind control protection from PfE doesn't only work against evil creatures, like the rest of the abilities of the spell. As the spell description says, that effect works regardless of alignment.

In this case, I agree with the Sage. Complete protection, coupled with a few other nice abilities (AC, save bonuses, etc.), is simply too good for a mere 1st level spell.

How about buying an 8,000 gp +1 weapon that has the spellblade quality attuned to Hold Person?

Again, it requires spell turning to make, but at 8k, it's cheaper than a ring of freedom of movement. So if you can't make something, perhaps you can buy/commission something.

((Spellblade is a +1 enchantment in Magic of Faerun that allows the wielder to be immune to one spell specified upon the item's creation, after being protected from the spell it allows you to let the magic drain away or cast it at someone else in one round as a free action.))

Woot! Go Fort Worth! :D

(Oh, and I'm also named Jeremy. Two Jeremys who live in the same general area and post on the same boards... hmm. Evil twins? Perhaps... ;) )

Look out, Pantheon! They'd better start watching out for us too! One of these days, we'll outnumber the Daves, and then there'll be trouble... Jeremys of the boards, unite!
