And, yeah, you're right about the wiz/sorc being a suboptimal choice - he's not taken (or taking) too many levels of sorcerer, for just that reason.
You're correct; being a specialist wizard does not affect your sorcerer spells at all. You can use sorcerer slots to cast spells from the banned school normally.Li Shenron said:

Note that you cannot automatically scribe sorcerer spells into the book. You must first create a scroll of the spell (paying the normal GP and XP costs), and then scribe from that scroll into your spellbook.
