RIP Christopher Lee.

So Christopher Lee died today. The man did more for the fantasy community in his life than most people ever will, at least in the breadth of what he did.

He was Saruman
He voiced Lucan D'Lere.
He was Count Dooku
He was Dracula
He produced a power metal album about Charlemagne in 2012. He was also a descendant of charlemagne.
He did voice overs for Rhapsody a fantastic power metal band in their own rights.

What a loss, but he lived a fantastic life.

He was also a war hero, a special forces guy who hunted nazis during/after WWII, and an intelligence officer. All over 50 years ago!

There's a story about how Peter Jackson tried to tell him to imagine what it would be like to kill someone with a knife (for a scene; though I don't recall Saruman doing that). Christopher Lee replied that he didn't need to imagine.

Saruman is (in the book) killed by being knifed by his henchman, Grima Wormtongue. I don't remember this scene from the movie, but maybe it is in the extended cut? Although, Grima cuts his throat, which may not quite match the idea of being knifed, which to me sounds more like being knifed in the back or in the belly.

Thx!

that is a bummer. You kind of expect folks like him to be around for the next great movie. Which is a testament to the man and his trade, that folks would be excited about something because Lee was involved with it.

There are a few people in the world who are/were cooler than you, for whatever value of "you" one may choose. It isn't a comment on you - it is just that these people were so awesome that they play on a different level than the rest of us.

Johnny Cash. Julia Child (who, on top of her accomplishments in the culinary world, was effectively a shark-frightener for the CIA!). And Christopher Lee. All cooler than you.

Except Chuck Norris. Only Chuck Norris is cooler than Chuck Norris.

Sad to see CL go -- I loved many of his characters. I wouldn't have guessed from some of his more recent work that he was in his late 80s (or older!)

I remember watching him win his BAFTA a couple of years ago. He was so frail that he could barely lift the thing. I think Stephen Fry had to help him.
