RIP ST:TNG Movies

Huh. I just caught Nemesis on cable and I have to say I was surprised at how good it was. It's no Kahn, of course, but it was much better than ST 5, Generations, and the previous one whose name I forget (with the planet of youth).

I agree. Nemesis is better than Final Frontier and Insurrection for sure, and edges out Generations. I kind of liked Generations actually. But I thought Nemesis was a little better.

Here's the thing I don't understand - I don't grok why folks think a hiatus is necessary for people to get their heads together. Sure, people who are currently working on productions of series need to focus their attention on what they are doing, but other people can get their heads screwed on straight and think about where the franchise should go while the thing is still running. It is called processing in parallel, and it works fine pretty much everywhere. Person A worries about the now, person B worries about the future.

I personally think the "viewers need a rest" argument is hooey. The viewers don't need a rest. They need solid characters and good writing. There aren't a whole lot of good genres TV shows out there right now. Give viewers something well crafted, and they'll watch it.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Make no mistake about this, if Enterprise is cancelled and there isn't a new movie in the works, the franchise is dead. You will not see it again unless they reinvent the original like they did (very effectively, I might add) with Battlestar Galactica. I actually have my doubts that would ever happen. You think Trek sucks now, wait until it exists only in reruns. A major driving force of science fiction TV will have slipped into oblivion.

As for the movies, I'm going to be a voice of dissent. If I'm going to sit down to enjoy a Trek movie, I would be more likely to put in Insurrection or even the much maligned Final Frontier before I would re-watch Nemesis. As far as I'm concerned it isn't canon. But then neither is Final Frontier for that matter. If it was Voyager would have been home within a week or two.

I and my SO are two of those people who want a rest. I'd really like to see a new ST show in 5 years. I want the taint of all of the bad Trek to fade out of my mind so I can enjoy it anew.

It would be essential that Berman not be involved, but rather younger people with a fresh view. (This from someone who isn't young.)

I don't subscribe to the viewers need a rest theory much, myself. But I do think the franchise needs a break and that would most likely mean no new projects for at least a year or 2 while the new production team gets things in order. A new TV show that goes back to basics would be fine by me. Can we advance time please about 50-100 years in the Trek universe and set it on the Entrerprise-F (or whatever designation would be around at that time). Let's get a new continuity instead of playing around in the "past."

I do not want to see Enterprise cancelled. I won't go ballistic like I did for Firefly or Farscape but I still like the show. I just don't love the show.

I can't agree with this. It came back once and has stayed around for some time. I can easily see it making another comeback if there is no exposure for X amount of time. Paramount has a cash cow and a built-in fanbase on their hands. If Trek dissappears for a while there is a very good chance it will pop up again.

Saying it is dead is like saying the Buffyverse is dead (after Angel is done for this season) or that the Batman franchise is dead (being revived as we speak and handled just as poorly as the last few Trek films). We don't know that for a fact. We do know that there are stories still left to be told in the Trek universe. Whether or not a show or movie is around in the next 2-3 years will have little to do with it being able to continue as a successful franchise. Sure, by that time it will be considered a "comeback" but it is certainly not out of the realm of possibility. Put a good showrunner at the helm and people will watch. The masses have spoken in the past and they will speak again - if the show is worth it.

Have to agree, good characters and story matter. I feel the show, the movies are playing it safe in format and story. They should boldly go forth not be apart of the herd.

I'd love to see a new incarnation of the original series. If you haven't seen this:

www.5yearmission.com

You should. It's a new cast (fan production) doing Classic Trek and it is EXTREMELY well done, for a fan production.

Love to see something like it on network TV - or maybe even an "Academy Days" show, showing a young Kirk Spock, McCoy, etc...
