Rocky Horror Remake???

RatPunk

First Post
I posted this over on Nutkinland because these boards were down, but I wanted to share with everyone:

Found this this morning on a news wire and frankly I'm mad:

"The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is becoming a TV picture show for Fox. "The Hollywood Reporter" says the network is developing a two-hour TV movie remake of the movie cult classic. Titled "The Rocky Horror Birthday Show," the movie is scheduled to air in February to mark the 30th anniversary of the London play written by Richard O'Brien. The new version is expected to include many of the same songs, but a different concept. The Dr. Frank-N-Furter character, for example, will be a successful plastic surgeon instead of an eccentric scientist.

What is it with these freaking Hollywood suits? Why can't they try finding an Original Idea for a change, instead of continually ruining the classics?

Man, this just honks me off...

Yeah, those jerk suits like Richard O'Brien.. who gave his permission and is personally involved in the project.

You get the torch! I will go get a pitchfork!

RatPunk felt ill
When O'Brien sat still
and just let Fox ruin his film

Furn_Darkside was there
Explaining with care
that Ritz approved of this re-film

Then Barendd came along
and thought up a lame song
With a tune he'd been hearing for years

Then at a deadly pace
He typed in (where?!) cyber-space (thank you!)
And sang through RatPunk's tears:

Horrid re-makes
TV mistakes
Take a classic
Make it tragic
See execs ruin
Awesome film scripts
Changing characters
to crap-on-a-stick

Oh, woe, woooooooooooooe

It's the aught-ites
Poorly re-made
Rocky Show

Thanks for not throwing toast & hot dogs at me! :D

On a more serious note.....

On the plus side, the original RH movie is actually pretty bad by itself. I would go so far as to say "painful to watch" without the audience. And this "remake" actually has some good people involved with it.

But.....

Despite its flaws, the original has become a classic. I just can't see Frank N. Furter as a plastic surgeon, living in a penthouse apartment. What, Brad won't marry Janet without breast implants, so they trek over to Franks late one night.....?!?!?!?

And anyone who's seen Shock Treatment, the O'Brien-written sequal to RH, has probably figured out that Richard O'Brien was a one-hit wonder. I don't think his involvement will help a remake.

I would argue (were this an argument) that that is exactly one of the things that makes it so popular and fun. I doubt people started yelling at the screen because it was a good movie... :)

LOL. Yeah, that does explain a lot!

But why did people go and see it again and again, before the audience participation really started? Oh, they didn't have a life--I forgot, this was before the internet! :D

Salutations,

I just like the original for the music- especially Meat Loaf.

This remake is also just for the birthday special on VH1- it is not a serious attempt at a "modernization" or anything of the sort.

The article I read even mentioned they would be cutting to live parties across the nation- similar to what MTV did for the 25th anniversary.

And, yes, I have seen Shock Treatment... *shiver*
