Rogue Sneak Attack Rules Question(s)!

It seems CB mixed up the order of the power.

Here's a screenshot from D381:

Set up like that tho, it's irrelevant to the argument at hand... it isn't a power templated like the one in question.

So... you really have two possibilities.

It's either like in CB, which IS templated like the power in question, or it's as it is in Dragon, in which case it lacks precident in a discussion about the power in question.

And yeah, I do agree the CB version is wonky.

Set up like that tho, it's irrelevant to the argument at hand... it isn't a power templated like the one in question.

To be honest even if we find x other powers that are templated like the one in question what do we do with them?

  • If they all fail to work under my interpretation of the rule one may think yours is right.
  • If it's about 50/50 who knows.
  • If most of them work perfectly fine /w my interpretation what does that tell us about yours.
Anyway we would end up with some kind of guessing - solving nothing.

Another approach would be looking at the individual pros and cons of each interpretation. But I think the outcome would be that you would take the interpretation you would personally prefer. Nothing more nothing less. Nevertheless I start and try it, please feel free to add pros and cons.

1) CA then hit:
PROS:

  • if you fullfill the requirements you're pretty much guaranteed to roll SA if you want to (possible exception: interrupt-like "power" that makes it somehow impossible to roll your damage at all - I think that's rather rare)
CONS:

  • if you don't fulfill the requirements you won't roll SA damage baring some special corner cases like a wraith blade weapon.
  • powers like the one in question cannot grant you SA

2) CA and hit or the other way round:
PROS:

  • it is probably easier to gain SA b/c you can gain it even after hitting (interruot-like effects may cause the target to become dazed before you roll damage)
  • powers like the one in question grant you SA
CONS:

  • you never know if you can apply your SA until you're actually rolling the SA damage b/c some interrupt-like effect may take CA away before you roll damage. I think that is more likely than the possibility of being denied to roll damage at all as in the pros section in 1).

Conclusions: Both interpretations have their own pros and cons. So no interpretation is by default pro/con players. Therefore, I will wait and see what you will add.
