Rogue vs Detect Magic - The Same Old Story Spun a Different Way

In any case, it's not that much of a nerf to hiding: the hiding/invisible character would still have total concealment unless the rules say otherwise somewhere, because "pinpointing a location" is not equal to "negating concealment".

Although I think Vegepygmy is cheating by bringing facts into the argument.

Hmmm... new thought. What about this:

Detect Magic said:
Magical areas, multiple types of magic, or strong local magical emanations may distort or conceal weaker auras.

Magic Aura said:
You alter an item's aura so that it registers to detect spells (and spells with similar capabilities) as though it were nonmagical, or a magic item of a kind you specify, or the subject of a spell you specify

You can make an object appear to be the subject "of a spell you specify" with no limit. Obviously this wouldn't work at all if it didn't duplicate the apparent power of the spell you specify, so you could grant a handful of pebbles or suchlike the aura of a 9th-level spell, effectively masking any weaker auras in the area. 1st level spell, day/level duration, so dirt cheap to use on a bunch of small objects which can be scattered around the room: is this the magical equivalent of an aniseed bonb to throw off dogs, or chaff to distract an incoming missile?

And as the Arcane Sight spell description references Detect Magic as its basic mode of operation, presumably these high-powered "aura bombs" would also prevent invisible or hiding characters from being spotted, or at least make Arcane Sight less-than-automatically successful.

Just idle musings: I'm sure there are lots of reasons why this couldn't work.

Or you'd cast it on a rock, making it a quickened disintegrate or whatever and can now hide behind the rock with all your magical items. You could hide a whole dragon's treasure there. Placing aura bombs all through your lair will become the new black.
