Rokugan D20: The Winds of Blood (Chapter 1)

"It appears to be so" Fan says. He is not at all disgusted by the body, or the death, even though he does find it unpleasent, especially for the poor women.

He looks to see how far the trench goes.

He looks to see how far the trench goes.

The trench extends in both directions, looks to be a makeshift irrigation ditch, perhaps the groundwork for a more permenent and more elaborate system. The ditch is filled with muddy water, though the stench from the bodies overpowers any other scents in the area.

Fan climbs out of the ditch, and examines the wagon, leaving the other samurai in the trench. He looks over the bodies, and in the wagon.

Kyuzo calmy surveys the ambush site.

Although still registering the details, he mainly studies the reactions of his surroundings, especially those around him; while without doubt something can be learned from an inspection of the dead, far more can be learned from the living. Besides, touching the corpses would only bring an ill fate.

Still occupied with his obervations, the Monk's discovery of a blood trail recalls him into reality.

Seeing some of the arrows in the hand of his companions, Kyuzo makes up his mind to ask them about their findings, mainly the Mantis samurai Michiba.

Fan finds little more then Kaiji did when he investigates the wagon once more. Kyuzo recognizes the body, as that of Kaiu Asami, a young samura-ko and a distant cousin to you on your mother's side. She was not much more experienced then yourself, but it is a pity to see her dead, in such a way. She was a good person and focused, the two of you were relatively close.

The sight of the dead Crab samurai finally shakes Kyuzo out of his dream-like state.
His failure stands clear before his eyes: The prospect of bettering himself through experience had blinded him to a simple truth of life: Experience is never granted, but must be earned.

Vowing to himself to avoid such trappings of his introspective nature in the future, Kyuzo hurries to the trench.

There he examines the dead Crab carefully, of course only by visual means, to ascertain if her knows her by chance or, if this is not the case, whether any hints concerning her identity can be found, i.e. a family or even a personal mon.

Sighing, Kyuzo climbs out of the trench.

Already his way of thinking and his own behaviour had made him a rather solitary person within the Crab Clan, but now his small circle of confidants had shrunk once again.

"She was Kaiu Asami, a relative of mine," he replied to the unspoken questions of those around him.
"We should better search further around, to see if any traces of her assailants can be found. We need to track them down as quickly as possible!"
