Router Help

Hey there computer masters! Would you allow me to have access to your vast knowledge and expertise? Please? :D

Alright, I set up a router a month or two ago to split my DSL connection between 2 computers. On the computer which also was directly connected to the modem, I set up the router through a setup CD that came with it - no problem. Then, I set up my second computer to the router and I had internet access as soon as I was connected, no setup required. I had the second computer hooked up to a different network in the winter so connecting it to my new router didnt need any new setup....I would guess because it was basically plug and play.

Now, my computer had a bunch of those annoying pop-up programs / cookies installed on it without my knowing (sister and gf frequent my computer). So, I went through my add/remove programs and toasted them all. However, when I restarted my computer....I no longer had any internet access. Moreover, my computer doesnt even detect the router. I have tried to re-install the whole network again but to no avail. I couldent have deleted anything to stop the router working because, as aforementioned, there was nothing installed, just plug and play.

Anyone know or have any suggestions about how I can get the internet back on my computer? Have I missed something obvious or very simple? btw - my ethernet card is fine.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Some more info might help:

Type of OS (operating system) on your computer?
Type/Model of router?

It sounds like your TCP/IP might not be functioning correctly. Some of the spyware you yanked out might have either corrupted and/or modified something.

Stupid suggestion..have you made sure the Ethernet card on the computer is Enabled? I'd also check the wiring..do the easy stuff first.

Zenon: Im running Windows XP and I have a 4 port router manufactured by NetEverywhere. I think you are probably correct about the TCP/IP screw-up. Any ideas?

Gariig: I mentioned in my first post that my ethernet card was fine. I also checked the wiring as well and everything is a go.

Cheers,

I'd make sure that you are obtaining an IP automatically and that DHCP is enabled. I was also talking about making sure in My Network Places the Ethernet card was enabled. Not sure what else after that.

Can you do a roll back with XP?

DHCP? and is there just something to check off to gather the IP automatically?

Im pretty sure its enabled in My Network, but I guess I better take another look.

What is this "Roll Back" you speak of? :D

Cheers, thanks for the help thus far!

The pinging is a good idea..also try binging the other computer. When did this problem start? You can get to rolling back from Start->Help

Here is a Microsoft Knowledge Base article on how to do a System Restore (what others have refered to as a "roll back"):

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306084

That should walk you through step-by-step. Pick a date before you uninstalled all the junk.

However, the bad part of System Restore is that you get all the junk you removed in Add/Remove back.

So, with that in mind, you also have the option to try to reset your TCP/IP. Here is another article that tells you how to do that in XP:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;299357

Before you do that, go the the Properties page of the TCP/IP protocol and make notes on all the settings (IP addresses, DNS, WINS, etc). After you reset the TCP/IP, you may need to re-enter these. You may also have to reinstall the router software.

edit - Here's another article that walks you through troubleshooting TCP/IP, like using ping, etc. Look in the Manual Troubleshooting section of the article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314067

You should start by attempting to ping everything first (simplest & easiest). Keep us posted.
