RP CRs and XP

Several of my fellow gamers have "forced" me to start running a RP intense campaign.
I'm fine with all the general parts of DMing, but I'm having difficulty with setting a CR, for the RP encounters. I was hoping some of you wonderful people would provide me with some pointers on doing so; or general things I should pay attention to when running a RP campaign. Thank you in advance.

PS. If any mods feels this belongs somewhere else, please move it.

Just ad hoc the entire XP. I see two choices.

1. Level 'em up after N encounters (where by the book N would be about 13-14).

2. Reread #1. Your group will likely not care about XP.

I would also ad hoc XP. Don't worry about if it actually comes out exactly as the rules would indicate for a more combat intensive game.

Hw I would do it, though, is more like an adventure award. Design an adventure that has Y number of significant stages. Figure out how much you would like them to level over the course of the adventure. Use those levels to detrmine how much XP they should gain. Divide the XP by your Y and just hand that much out when they get past each stage.

For example. Say I'm planning an adventure with 20 significant stages (or encounters) and I want them to advance from level 1 to level three. That means that they'll go from 0 XP to 3,000 XP. So, 3,000 XP necessary divided by 20 stages means I should hand out about 150 XP per person per stage. Maybe a little bit less at the beginning and a little nit more at the end. So long as it totals around the 3,000 that you want them to get, that's all that really matters.
