RPG Crowdfunding News – “Flee, Mortals!”, Appalachia, Fantasy Companion, and more

This week I share RPG crowdfunding projects that end between April 25th and May 11th. The first two million-dollar campaigns of April, an offer coming from the GameChangers website, a pair of The Fantasy Trip adventures, two books for MÖRK BORG, and an homage to the Super Mario Brothers, this sampling has a variety of options to share.

Flee, Mortals - The MCDM Monster Book for 5e.png

"Flee, Mortals!" - The MCDM Monster Book for 5e from Matt Colville
  • END DATE: Mon, May 2 2022 11:00 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $70 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of the book plus a sticker
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Matt Colville offers up over 300 pages of 5e content including 300 monsters. This book provides named villains, original variations of classic monsters, and rules to make them so much cooler than their “stock” progenitors. This means fewer spells and more abilities, plus options like minions, companions, and more. As Morrus wrote, this is one of [likely] four million dollar RPG Kickstarters this month. If you’re interested in seeing one of the more popular gaming options from one of the most popular gaming creators, check out the campaign page for a preview of the book.

Old Gods of Appalachia Roleplaying Game.jpg

Old Gods of Appalachia Roleplaying Game from Monte Cook Games
  • END DATE: Fri, May 6 2022 8:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Cypher System
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $70 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This campaign brings an alternate 1920s/1930s Appalachia to tabletop. Adapted from the award winning Old Gods of Appalachia podcast by Steve Shell and Cam Collins, this game opens the door to the darkness, magic, and horror of the backwoods of the East Coast. The decision to combine the character focused Cypher System with a magical horror setting like Old Gods of Appalachia will pay dividends. The combination allows players to focus on their characters, which is a key element of any quality horror product. As the second million dollar RPG Kickstarter so far this month, OGoA has a lot of interesting options, a known system, a new setting, and podcast support to help you envision this world’s possibilities. If you’re interested in Appalachia, check out the campaign page for a free downloadable primer.

Fantasy Companion for SWADE.png

Fantasy Companion for SWADE from Pinnacle Entertainment Group
  • END DATE: Tuesday, April 26 2022
  • SYSTEM(S): Savage Worlds Adventure Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $50 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of the book and archetype cards
  • NOTES: Thanks to Matrix Sorcica in last week’s comment section for lifting this up to me. This is crowdfunding through Pinnacle’s GameChanger website
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Want to create your own fantasy RPG for Savage Worlds Adventure Edition? If so, this 192-page sourcebook gives you the tools to simulate The Lord of the Rings, Conan, The Witcher, or your original setting with new edges, hindrances, rules for creating strongholds, new powers, and compatibility with their Pathfinder for Savage Worlds. If you’re a fan of SWADE and fantasy, this book is worth checking out at Pinnacle’s GameChanger site. By moving away from Kickstarter, Pinnacle is taking an exposure risk, but the numbers they’re sharing show there’s an upside to this decision.
The Fantasy Trip Quick Quests 6 and 7, Two New Adventures.png

The Fantasy Trip Quick Quests 6 and 7, Two New Adventures from Steve Jackson Games and Warehouse 23
  • END DATE: Mon, April 25 2022 2:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): The Fantasy Trip
  • PROJECT TYPE: Adventure module
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $15 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of both adventures plus another short RPG
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This campaign offers two single session TFT adventures: Quick Quest 6: The Halfling's Hole by David L. Pulver and Quick Quest 7: Incident at the Golden Badger by Stefan Jones. The pitch for The Halfling’s Hole is on fire. The inn had a black out, the first person to investigate screamed. Briefly. Will you go in next? Incident at the Golden Badger gives you another tavern crawl, this one with horrors bursting out of patrons, horrors you’ll need to kill. In addition, you get One Roll Quest by Steve Jackson, a game in which you roll the special dice-in-a-die and deal with whatever comes out. Based on the description, this is a pretty cool extra with rules, cards, a special die, and a dice bag. If you want the core rules for The Fantasy Trip for free, check out the campaign page to download a free option.

Pipeworld - Tabletop RPG Monster Manual Zines.jpg

Pipeworld - Tabletop RPG Monster Manual Zines from Bloat Games
  • END DATE: Tue, April 26 2022 9:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition and SURVIVE THIS!!
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $7 for the PDF of the 5e rules version of the book
  • DISCLAIMER: I have freelanced for Bloat Games. I am not a part of this project
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This is an expansion to Overworld, bringing more not-Mario to the gaming table. Inspired by Super Mario Brothers 3, the standout in this production is the Phil Stone artwork. It’s so fun, it is perfectly Mario and perfectly cartoon deadly. Offered as a zine for 5e, SURVIVE THIS!!, or a system neutral, this game lets you game the pipes with new monsters, bosses, and even an ultimate boss. If you want to bring a Mario-like world to your tabletop games, this is a great option. If nothing else, check out the campaign page to see Phil’s artwork, it is spot on.

SVMP- Swamp Crawl in Mörk Borg.png

Over 80 pages of swamp tombs and catacombs with 20 new monsters, 3 new classes, diseases, an adventure, and more. If the idea of swamps and dungeon crawls presents the eck-factor you need for your table, this adventure awaits.

HST.3.33, a Third-Party CY_BORG Musical Interlude.png

HST.3.33, a Third-Party CY_BORG Musical Interlude from One-Trick Phony and Philip Reed
  • END DATE: Tue, April 26 2022 5:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): MÖRK BORG
  • PROJECT TYPE: Music and source material
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $36 + $6 S/H in the US for the digital version, the printed pocket map, and the 7-inch record
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Philip Reed is making music with One-Trick Phony as they offer up a pair of singles to act as a CY_BORG soundtrack. Beyond the music, Philip offers a new pocket map (a huge fold out sheet that comes in a tiny package) with adventure hooks and a new NPC. With the setup on one side and details about HST.3.33, the NPC, and more on the other, it’s a cool format for mass visual information download. If you’re a CY_BORG fan (the cyberpunk MÖRK BORG), this is a great extra to check out, plus you can hear the music on the campaign page.

Having grown up in Appalachia, in southern West Virginia, it sounds a bit funny to use the term “East Coast”. Since the very definition of Appalachia is that it’s in the interior. Kind of lIke calling the Rocky Mountains the “West Coast”.

“East”, yes, from a continental perspective. Maybe “the backwoods of the Eastern U.S.”

Anyway, the game looks great!
