RPG Crowdfunding News – Broken Tales, Into the Wyrd and Wild, UnFamiliar, and more

This week’s article includes RPG crowdfunding projects ending between May 17th to June 4th. While I can’t share every project, there are lots of 5e content as well original systems in this piece.

Pexia's Guide to Omeria Fifth Edition Campaign Sourcebook from DMDave

• WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This is a revised reprinting of Charles Ferguson-Avery’s Into the Wyrd and Wild, a project that sold out quickly. Here, Charles partners with the publisher of Never Going Home, a game series that he is the artist for. I’ve spoken with Charles and Wet Ink about their past collaborations here, here, and here. This 248-page book offers a wilderness-horror setting, monsters, and, while largely system neutral, there’s stats enough for the broader strokes of Dungeons & Dragons if that’s your bag.

• WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? You used to be a wizard’s familiar, now you’ve been set free, yet you still have a taste for adventuring. As a former familiar, you’re eager to embrace your new status and become an epic adventurer, an epic adventurer that everyone wants to pet. Rooted in 5e, this project lets you expand on the world with new species and six classes (with subclasses) built around the familiar’s abilities, form, arcane past, and spirit type. The thirteen species of the Find Familiar spell are expanded with three subspecies so you have plenty of options. Having your familiar strike out on their own with the addition of a strong background offers roleplaying options combined with interesting combat challenges when you’re around a foot tall. For my part, I imagine someone using their existing familiar from another campaign to help give this one some background.

Treasures Of The Troll King: A MÖRK BORG Adventure from Loot The Room

• WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This 20-page RPG zine and adventure pamphlet combines the work of Chris Bissette (The Wretched) with the art of Johan Nohr and the MÖRK BORG ruleset to create a sewer crawl that is sure to be a dark adventure in a nasty location. If you’re a fan of MÖRK BORG, this promises to be one of the better third party adventures for that engine because Chris has a solid track record and he’s working with the right artist for this world.

The Morra Cinematic Game System from Mighty Narwhal Productions

• WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This project offers a new gaming system from a collection of creators whose resumes include work on and for World of Darkness, Chronicles of Darkness, Paizo, and Shadowrun. They’re crafting a game that lets you cover any type of cinematic experience you’d like to create. One of the more interesting aspects is the Writer’s Room, a system in which scenes are discussed before they are played to ensure everyone is onboard for the direction and content. If you’re looking for a universal system, this one is worth checking out.

Valbrik's Silver Ring from Limitless Adventures

This 5e project offers an adventure for 8th level characters and a set of 81 cards to randomize the experience. The cards include combat and roleplaying encounters, puzzles, skill challenges, and more. Limitless Adventures produces a number of well-received products and this looks like another winner.

In this world, civilization is isolated by ever changing forests. Your journeys are meant to connect these outposts, but the game is more about the journey than the arrival. If you’re looking for a primitive world of unexplored wonders, this offers a nice taste of that.

This horror RPG is inspired by the works of Stephen King as well as The X-Files, and Twin Peaks. If you’re looking for light rules and horror based around a town where every evil is set loose, this is worth a look.

Monsterhearts: Brave New Worlds from Creatively Queer Press

• WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? If you’re a fan of Monsterhearts 2, this book offers twelve campaign settings, all small towns created by queer and POC creators offering unique locations for your game. While not an official Monsterhearts 2 product, the creator, Avery Alder, contributes one of the settings for the book. If you’re a fan of the game, this looks like a great addition as you’ll get a number of settings to pick from.

Once More Into the Void
Launched on the 8th.
Inspired by [Star Trek] Picard and Mass Effect 2.
Question driven scenes, to establish the backstory that the party is building trust (and complications) to face in the climax/penultimate scene. A group who have drifted apart after serving under the Captain.

Why am I sharing it?
It's an ideal mode for trying storygames that aren't simulations.
The subgenre interests me. It's used in Picard. It's been used in TNG once (TNG: The Wounded). It's also part of B5: Crusade's DNA, albeit in much longer form.
Andromeda is also initially this, but without the crew having a past together with the captain.
Fundamentally, the subgenre is, "Why did they drift apart, and do they manage to come back together in time to save the (planet/empire/galaxy)

I find that an interesting story spot.

Someone really needs to distribute their books in North America, so we're not reliant on the Kickstarter campaigns. As it is, getting the past set of books and the new set either requires a very expensive buy-in for everything or everything plus a hat (!) or backing it twice at a lower level.

Into the Wyrd and Wild looks like the perfect system to hexcrawl. Very good for solitary play.
