RPG Crowdfunding News – Heckna!, Creatures, Skullkickers, and more

In this article, I share two week’s worth of RPG crowdfunding projects, all ending by October 15th. Why share two weeks? Because Morrus and Peter Coffey’s podcast, Morrus’ Unofficial Tabletop RPG Talk, uses this column for their “The Greatest Game In All The World” segment and the end date for each project needs to be moved up to make sure the podcast is timely. That means this week has more projects to share.

An official Dead Milkmen themed RPG module by Andrew Ervin. 5e compatible and system-neutral. Severed Books is thrilled to announce Lost Tomb of the Bitchin' Chimera, an officially licensed Dead Milkmen roleplaying game module set in the weird world of Tiny Town. Written by Andrew Ervin and illustrated by Justin Sirois, this one-shot adventure blends fantasy and punk into a hilarious story your players will never forget. A monstrous seabird is terrorizing the hamlet of Tiny Town. The distraught Mistress Brownnose calls for aid. If our adventurers hope to placate the beast, they must cross the Swampland of Desire and find the Life-Is-Shit Boneyard. There, if they’re brave enough—or dumb enough—to enter the lair of the Burrow Owlbear, they might just find the Tomb of the Bitchin’ Chimera. The adventure is ultimately system-agnostic, and can also be enjoyed using the rules of the world’s greatest roleplaying game. It has been designed for player characters of levels 3 to 5 and you can play it as a stand-alone game or easily fit it into your ongoing campaign.”

Parselings from Smunchy Games
  • END DATE: Wed, October 7 2020 9:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original system
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $85 + $10 US S/H for 2x PDFs, 2x books, and a deck of cards
  • NOTE: At d20 Radio, I spoke with Leo Cheung, the game designer of Parselings, and publisher, Sean Fallon (SMUNCHY), about this project (here)
Parselings is a modern Deck building RPG about using collaborative word magic and discovering your place in it. The game takes place in a world like our own, but with one major difference – to some, words have literal power. Parsecytes, swarms of ravenous ink-like parasitic organisms, have emerged into the world causing irreversible changes to society and our ecosystem. When a Parsecyte invades a human host, it forms a symbiosis with them, together becoming an entity known as a Parseling. At a glance, Parselings are indiscernible from most other humans except for the labels on their skin and the ink mixed into their blood. When brought together in groups, these individuals become greater than the sum of their parts. The infected hosts can use their tattoos to form phrases and sculpt the world to their desires. This power has come to be known as a Parse. You will play as one of these beings. Struggling to strike a balance between appeasing the Parsecyte within, and proving you are a complex human being who cannot only be defined by a few careless words. This is both a curse and a blessing, but with the others that share your affliction, the world is your oyster.”

No I have not, sounds interesting.

Saw the collecrors package that included all 3 hardback books was sold out on kickstarter. Their website doesnt give much info other than theres a free PHB in .pdf on DTRPG but I didnt see any hardbacks available there so I didnt bother downloading it. Im not interested in .pdfs without having hard copies. But yeah it looked interesting.

Egg, there's an interesting crowdfunding project you might want to take a look at called The Wagadu Chronicles which is a combination MMORPG and 5e RPG, based on African fantasy.
The end date is to far away for this article (I'm sure Egg will get to it in the stretch run), but that project seems really well developed. The free 5e Lore guide is 200 pages and has wonderful layout and art. I don't care about an MMOG, but I think I will be supporting this project regardless. Great addition to 5e.

Why is Heckna so highly backed? Maybe because of the miniatures?
I haven’t backed it yet as I’ve gotten very selective with the RPG campaigns I back purely due to the amount of adventures I already have.

That said, I’m considering backing it as the carnival horror theme really appeals to me, so maybe the theme appeals to a lot of people?

That is looking very interesting! They are offering a free lore book preview on the Kickstarter page, and the expanded 5E book seems like it'll shape up into a fascinating setting. I'm still perusing, but so far I'm enjoying their take on race, or rather lineage in this adaptation.

Must be. Explains in part the appeal of Insane Clown Posse and Slipknot.

I wish they had a book only pledge.
