RPG Crowdfunding News – Heckna!, Creatures, Skullkickers, and more

In this article, I share two week’s worth of RPG crowdfunding projects, all ending by October 15th. Why share two weeks? Because Morrus and Peter Coffey’s podcast, Morrus’ Unofficial Tabletop RPG Talk, uses this column for their “The Greatest Game In All The World” segment and the end date for each project needs to be moved up to make sure the podcast is timely. That means this week has more projects to share.

Written by Andrew Ervin and illustrated by Justin Sirois, this one-shot adventure blends fantasy and punk into a hilarious story your players will never forget. A monstrous seabird is terrorizing the hamlet of Tiny Town. The distraught Mistress Brownnose calls for aid. If our adventurers hope to placate the beast, they must cross the Swampland of Desire and find the Life-Is-Shit Boneyard. There, if they’re brave enough—or dumb enough—to enter the lair of the Burrow Owlbear, they might just find the Tomb of the Bitchin’ Chimera. The adventure is ultimately system-agnostic, and can also be enjoyed using the rules of the world’s greatest roleplaying game. It has been designed for player characters of levels 3 to 5 and you can play it as a stand-alone game or easily fit it into your ongoing campaign.”

Parselings from Smunchy Games
  • END DATE: Wed, October 7 2020 9:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original system
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $85 + $10 US S/H for 2x PDFs, 2x books, and a deck of cards
  • NOTE: At d20 Radio, I spoke with Leo Cheung, the game designer of Parselings, and publisher, Sean Fallon (SMUNCHY), about this project (here)
Parselings is a modern Deck building RPG about using collaborative word magic and discovering your place in it. The game takes place in a world like our own, but with one major difference – to some, words have literal power. Parsecytes, swarms of ravenous ink-like parasitic organisms, have emerged into the world causing irreversible changes to society and our ecosystem. When a Parsecyte invades a human host, it forms a symbiosis with them, together becoming an entity known as a Parseling. At a glance, Parselings are indiscernible from most other humans except for the labels on their skin and the ink mixed into their blood. When brought together in groups, these individuals become greater than the sum of their parts. The infected hosts can use their tattoos to form phrases and sculpt the world to their desires. This power has come to be known as a Parse. You will play as one of these beings. Struggling to strike a balance between appeasing the Parsecyte within, and proving you are a complex human being who cannot only be defined by a few careless words. This is both a curse and a blessing, but with the others that share your affliction, the world is your oyster.”

Yeah the art does look pretty nice. Have you read the other Fate Forge books, "Adventures and Grimoire"?
I was a backer of the first Fateforge Kickstarter and have both books, so I can answer any questions you may have about them. (And yes, the art all the way through both books is just as nice! This is the same French company that created the award winning Shadows of Esteren, if you've ever seen that.)

Basically, they are a re-presentation of the 5e rules set. The 1st book features the races and classes along with the game info like skills, combat rules, etc. There is new subclasses, and even 1 new class, the Scholar. The 2nd book features all the rules for spells and spell casting, including 360+ spells (many of them new), Corruption, Geomancy, and more.

One of the cool things about this version of 5e is that it includes many optional rules in a modular system. There are a dozen little symbols at the beginning of the book, each one represents 1 theme or idea. If you want a "Dark" campaign, look for the rules and side notes with the Dark symbol. Same with "Gritty", "Intrigue", "Action", etc. If you don't want to use these optional rules and additions, base Fateforge is entirely compatible with the regular WotC 5e books. (I'm not sure about how much, if any, of the Creatures book will reference those optional rules changes and additions, but it's being made specifically for Fateforge...)

Thanks that's a great summation. I don't follow kickstarters too much for the simple fact the turn around is too long and I'm not in favor for stretch goals. That's why I commend EN Publishing for not including them in their Kickstarters. Anyhow FateForge sounds like a nice set of books that I wish I had got in on the ground floor and would've backed the collectors edition now but it was sold old. Alas at the end of the day it had more than likely have just sat on my shelf but the modular systems seems like a good way of quantifying rules for things I've always done thru the years. Sometimes I think that 5E, classes excluded, is a good system where some things should be left to DMs purvey and doesn't need everything spelled out to the letter. The one thing Im worried about with most new books/Campaign settings is having to teach players the idiosyncrasies and nuances of that systems. Truth be told, I'll most likely back Level Up so I can pick and choose parts I want to use but its seems a little more crunchy for my taste. @Morrus, is there a general page count, format and book count for Level Up?

Funnily enough, I have zero interest in ICP or Slipknot. The creepy horror really speaks to me though.

I cant stand Corey Taylor these days, any music news site has some ridiculous quote by him. Dudes a rockstar, go away no one cares about your creepy band, stone sour or your political opinions.
