RPG Crowdfunding News – What Once Went Wrong, Crypt of the Devil Lich, and more

This week, I look at more RPG projects that end between March 5th and 25th. As Morrus shared last week, there are two million-dollar RPG Kickstarters running right now. In addition to that milestone, which is massive on its own, it’s worth noting that there are an additional nine RPG and RPG platform Kickstarters in the six figure club as well as another 3 to 4 that are likely to cross that threshold before they end.

Considering that these projects exist alongside over 200 other RPG projects (largely a part of Zine Quest) campaigning right now. Despite the massive field, none of these factors – eleven heavy hitters or a sea of options – impacted the ability of the mid-tier or lower-tier RPGs in finding their audiences. Through February and early March 2021, the tabletop RPG market is turning incredible crowdfunding numbers and we’re seeing more validation of the fact that RPGs have a growing audience.

  • PROJECT TYPE: RPG zine
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $6 for the PDF
  • DISCLAIMER: I’ve attended conventions with Craig Campbell of Nerdburger Games
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? An homage to Quantum Leap for the gaming table? Sign me up! When award-winning creator, Craig Campbell, announced his plans to make this game, I knew Craig would make the right game, something that felt like the series while being table ready. Let’s breakdown what draws me to this project: a 24-page RPG zine, the art is done in grayscale and “leaping” blue, the video pays homage to the opening of each episode, the system is rules light that allows the build up of points to accomplish tasks which helps to get each leap its arc, and, of course, Craig’s resume (CAPERS, Die Laughing, and more). As a fan of Craig’s work and Quantum Leap, I can’t wait to try this RPG.

Based on the adventure introduced at Gen Con 2004, this crawl has a mummy dragon, a castle suspended above lava by chains, and more designed for 4 to 6 players at 15th level for 5e or 7th level for DCC. If you need a higher level adventure with an amazing pedigree, this gem awaits.

  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? If you’re a fan of Steve Jackson Games’ The Fantasy Trip, then this is one of the key third party products to grab: multiple books of ready to run NPCs as allies, encounters, and enemies. This is a great GM resource, something that will vastly improve the speed of your TFT games.

Zine Quest 2021: The Wizard's Grimoire from lumpley games

  • SYSTEM(S): A version of the Powered by the Apocalypse ruleset
  • PROJECT TYPE: RPG zine
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $20 + $4 US S/H for the PDF and print versions of the zine
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Vincent Baker, creator of the Powered by the Apocalypse engine, is taking one of his ideas and turning it into a series of zines. This campaign supports the first one in which you play an ambitious wizard who found a grimoire beyond your skill but not beyond your ambition. This game is a part of series set in the same world including The Barbarian's Bloody Quest, The Last Adventure, and The Thief & the Necromancer, all of which have a zine coming up in a future offering. Story wise, if you want magic that is more arcane and less knowable than many RPGs, this zine offers you a new experience.

DM Yourselves from Tom Scutt
  • END DATE: Wed, March 10 2021 8:32 AM EST.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: RPG zine
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: £8 + £6 US S/H for the PDF and print copies of the zine
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This project creates another 32 pages sharing how to take 5e solo from a creator with a track record on the subject. If you want to play an adventure without a party, Tom Scutt offers a companion volume to his original DM Yourself product complete with more solo roleplay options.

Crafty Quest Box: Your Kid's First Fantasy Adventure from Kids Arcanum

  • ADDITIONAL REPORTING: Interview with Michael Best of Kids Arcanum coming tomorrow
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Want a box of RPG-related crafts for your youngest to play with? This box offers a tactile, immersive RPG experience for kids that may be too young to read in-depth rulesets. For kindergartners to fifth grade, these activities relate to a fantasy RPG story and let kids play while crafting neat memories. If you have a young child in your life, this may be a good way to introduce roleplaying to them.

The Unclean Leporello of the Foul Wizard Baum, for Mörk Borg from Philip Reed Games
  • END DATE: Fri, March 5 2021 5:00 PM EST.
  • SYSTEM(S): Mörk Borg
  • PROJECT TYPE: Accordion-style sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $14 + $6 US S/H for the PDF and accordion-style book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? In terms of content, this book offers d20 new unclean powers and d14 sacred powers on the other side, all for the Mörk Borg system. Beyond the content, there’s the product’s format. This is another one of Philip Reed’s experiments in formatting, content, and delivery, this time creating a foldout RPG product. It’s not a GM screen or pamphlet, instead it’s an accordion. I’m glad Philip pioneers these types of projects as they open the door for other creators to explore what can be done. I want to see this one and hold it in my hands, to figure out if I, or any other creator, might have a clever idea for this format.

I've got the first Roll & Play book, and it's fantastic. It has almost every table I'd want as a DM (I always need a pickpocketing table, which it doesn't have). It's also gorgeous, super-usable at the table with its spiral binding and water-resistant pages, etc. Highly recommended.

The Hexbound campaign confuses me on multiple levels. Funding the financing of an app that works with the book feels like a separate campaign sewn onto this one. And the book itself is going to take a year to fulfill, according to the campaign, making me wonder how far along they actually are on this book. This is one I think I'll wait to hit the streets for, which is a shame, since I have a player very invested in witchy content. (I did back the Haunted Hamlet Zinequest campaign, though, which came with two other witchy PDFs, which helps.)

Super-excited to see Crypt of the Devil Lich back. The more realistic cover actually makes her fingers creepier. The cool original Erol Otus cover, like most of his work, is not meant to be taken literally, so her messed-up hands could be somewhat glossed over. The only question for me is whether to go with the 5E or DCC version.

It seems like there are so many awesome RPG kickstarters live at the moment! It's great to be featured alongside them, thank you Egg :D

Also, thanks Whizbang Dustyboots, really happy to hear how much you like your GM's Toolkit. For the sneaky rogue in the party I DM for, I always use p92 for pickpocket loot. He pickpockets things so often, it's a surprise I haven't used up the entire table yet haha

I retract my earlier statement -- I just somehow missed page 92.

Glad to see it now, because I'm running five games. None of them have a healer, but all of them have at least one rogue.
