Why does it seem that editing seems to be a lost art in the RPG industry? Ever since the release of 3rd edtion D&D, sloopy editing seems to be accepted as the norm. There are countless errors in spelling, mechanicle errors, character blocks that don't match rules, reference errors, ect, ect.
Look at any product and there are tons of errors. WOTC seems to be particulary bad at editing. Other wise good books; all the core books, Wheel of Time, and Star Wars(not to mention the Reveised Core Rule book), Orential Adventures; are marred by sloopy, sloppy editing.
Companies that in the past have had excellent books, are making sloopy d20 versions of the book. The d20 7th sea, for example.
What makes the problem worse, the books are not cheap. This hobby of ours has become an expensive past time. It is not a pleasant experience to spend $40 on a book filled with errors(Wheel of Time), or have to Spend $40 on a reviesed version of a game that was released less than two years ago (Star Wars d20).
I know that no one has put a gun to my head to make me buy anything. Though, when I spend my money, I would like to think that I am buying quality. Its not so bad to spend $10 on a module that needs to be seriously tweeked to make it work well. Its another thing to lay down close to $40 for a book and have to spend a serious amount of time to make sense out of some of the mistakes.
Is the RPG industry becoming the software industry? People buying the newest versions of software(say oh...Windows) know that there are going to be tons of mistakes. This is taken in stride as how things are. Though it should not be. We as counsumers need to demand quality for our money. Please, game makers and publisers, EDIT.
p.s. makes me look back to the days of the orginal werewolf, and page XX and smile.
