RPGxplorer

Anyone heard much about this upcoming program? The link to the website is as follows - RPGXplorer .

I can't remember where I found the original link for it, and unfortunately havent had much chance to see what it actually does, but it seems like a viable option for character generation and also new feats/spells/rules.

Any useful comments would be appreciated.

As we have learned dealing with the other Char Gens, any hype prior to actually installing and using is pretty much useless.

It doesn't handle Epic yet so I would only be able to use for 2/3 of the games I run, kind of useless for me. As for the user interface, I use Total Commander for a filer manager because I hate Explorer. They are pricing it as a top of the line product yet, it is far from it.

I've been checking them out since I saw their ad in Dungeon. It has a modern looking UI. I like that. Its a windows app and even uses the .net framework, which I also like.

They won't have psionics or epic levels in the initial release, but supposedly they will go in a later release.

So far it looks interesting, but limited to the SRD. It doesn't appear as extensible as I would like. They have dialog boxes for editing game elements like classes and armor, with specific controls on them. For example, you can modify armor, but only the properties provided in their dialog box (weight, cost, dex penalty, etc.). What happens if I want to use a damage reduction variant from Unearthed Arcana? Do i have to manually edit the XML data?

I'm hoping that in the years following the release of 3rd edition, developers have refined software design for character generators. I'm willing to give this one a chance. I'll be checking out the demo when it's released.

I don't agree with this statement. $30 is hardly premium pricing. As to whether its worth $30 or not, I'd have to check out the demo.

AFAIC, $30 is an affordable price tag. My Campaign Cartographer 2 Pro cost me $40, and it only has basic features (expansions to CC2-Pro cost about the same). But as a cheap SOB, I hope I get more bang for my bucks.

I also hope they got a good distributors because I'd rather buy RPGXP at my FLGS.

Whats a premium price tag for d20 Char Gens?

I am not comparing this to lets say, Adobe CS. I am comparing it against the other 5 or 6.

I know as far as my biggest problem with Char Gens I cannot even comment on because I have not tried.. Question is simple, does this software help or hinder PC creation?

Who knows....

Granted I wish them luck though and of course, only time will tell :)

I understand comparing the price to other char gens out there. But I tend to compare software to the cost of a typical PC game (~$50) to gauge its pricing, since that's what I usually buy. Anything above that I'd consider premium for this type of software.

And I'd happily pay a premium if it actually helped me create characters easily and let me create my own data. That would cover most of my DM manual labor.

I'd rather them keep prices low and make a bigger profit margin by cutting out the middle man, so I don't mind purchasing a download only version.

I'd probably change my tune the first time my computer crashed and I lost the software tho. :p
