Rules Lawyers Anonymous

I haven't played in a while, so I can't remember with detail what I am - but I'm probably a bit of a rules lawyer - but not to be obnoxious. Starting up with 3E, we all were learning the rules.

I think to a great degree, it is a good thing - so long as it is fair and correct, it can help everyone to learn how the rules work. Once everyone is a rules lawyer, then no one is, because rules disputes will tend to happen less because you'll be doing the rules correctly to begin with. That is more fun for everyone - no one likes it when something happens that is just because of some misread rule.

v) If you really can't help it, just look all 'fidgety' instead - someone is sure to ask! :)

Absolutely :)

My current DM isn't bad on rules, but I'm a little more up on some of the subtleties. A few of the players in our group are simply dire, however.

I've got my 'dubious eyebrows' expression down, now, though. When one of the other players says something that's not quite right (or flat-out wrong :) ), I do my 'dubious eyebrows', and if the DM feels it's worth checking up on, he'll quickly look it up (or ask).

That way, the rules are being adhered to, but I'm not the one contradicting other players (overtly, at least), and the DM gets the chance to decide it's not important to get a particular bonus exactly right in a given round, or whatever. (That guy's on three hit points... whether it's +17 or +19 to your roll, he's still dead!, for example.)

Hello Ari,

The name is Patryk (Ruemere) and I am game master. In consequence, I try to know the rules better than most players and I do not hesitate to use that knowledge to gain the upper hand in any circumstances... I am a rules lawyer who does his rules-lawyering before and after the session. During the session I enjoy roleplaying intervening only if the rules would either save a character or important NPC (or doom... even as a player I try to be as impartial as possible).

I'm a rules lawyer. And I proud of it because I don't feel the the need to bring out every petty problem during the game.

I'm a rules lawyer. We've talked about it some time ago at SSS forums :)

I'm a rules lawyer who welcomes you to the club of people who actually think about what they read and commit important stuff to memory.

Heh.

Regards,
Ruemere

PS. There are few more disruptive activities than a player suddenly whining about not knowing spell effect/ability/skill in a middle of intense combat round... read the rules and/or abide by GMs word is my motto.

Hi, my name is Kimmo and I'm a rules lawyer.

However, I'm also the DM and I use my superioir rules knowledge to beat the PCs into bloody pulp until they read the PHB and learn the rules.

IMHO, players who are *not* rules lawyers are annoying and slow the game down even more than those who actually know the rules of the game they are playing. And not just because they keep making new characters. :)
