I ran in the 21st Annual Army Ten-Miler yesterday (10/2)...
Decided a couple of months ago that it would be a good challenge for my 43-year old slightly overweight self to accomplish. Stuck to the training schedule (even running 3 times on my recent Italy vacation, in-between bottles of wine), but was sick most of last week, so I only got in one training run.
Race day arrives...feeling OK...start the run with almost 20,000 other people...adreneline kicks in...first 5 or 6 miles slide by pretty quick (~ 10 min/mile pace)...pass mile marker 7...and.......
.....the next mile goes on forever.
Apparently, several minutes after the race began, a security alert forced a change in the race route, extending it from 10 miles to 11.25 miles. By this time, I am feeling it and start slowing down a bit.
I didn't mind that the race got extended...but they had no water points after the 7 mile mark due to the course change. That meant the last 4.25 miles was with no hydration...bleah :\ . I wasn't moving too quick when I crossed the finish line, but I finished, making it the longest run I have done in the last 17 years. Amazingly, I can still walk today
!
All-in-all, a pretty good experience...but next time, I will have one of those GPS training watch thingees so I actually know how fast I ran.
