S1: The Strange Case of Aif Jenkins' Farm (E13 judge) - Concluded

Assuming the PCs step aside, the two men pass through the door and look around...Toler and Rafferty move South, towards the wolf sounds and the gate.
Boog waited for the men to get a few paces away then unleashed yet another one of his Powers, one that would let him influence Toler's thoughts. He silently cursed as he once again failed to suppress the chime that sounded inside the head of Beamer and the others, and thanked his foresight for waiting until Toler and Rafferty were outside the range of the effect.[sblock=OoC: ]manifesting Charm, Psionic on Toler, DC14 Will save negates. 26/34 PP remaining. Roll to suppress display was d20+9=14, failure.[/sblock]

It's a short trot to the big gate from the door to the stable. Boog hits Toler with a psionic charm as he is walking away. Everyone hears the chime in their heads. Toler looks back, but both keep moving towards the gate. Rafferty hops up on the stand next to the door dexterously, now holdilng his strange war axe. He stands now next to the guard, presumably either Bill or Tom, who is gazing out at the night anxiously, loaded crossbow in hand. There's only room for two on the stand. Toler stands below them, holding his sword nervously.

The gate itself is attached at the base on the ground, and can be raised or lowered by a winch like a drawbridge. The winch in next to the stand where the guard is. The 'wolves' continue to howl and bark.

Beamer: [sblock] Despite dismissing your spell, the wolf howls continue from about where your spell was centered.[/sblock]

Beamer communicates over the mindlink to Banion and Boog:
[SBLOCK]I dismissed the spell. Those howls aren't mine. Sounds like it worked a little too well. I think you'll have plenty of distractions.[/SBLOCK]
Beamer pulls his crossbow and a quiver from his haversack. Even on the stand he would be unable to see outside so he instead moves near Banion.

He also directs Louie to perch on the corner of the east corner of the south wall to see what's going on.

What could it mean?
"It means we have wolves", sent Boog over the link to all and sundry. He strolled up to a clearly worried Toler. "Looks like we have a little company", he observed with the casual air a housewife picking out fruit at the market. He gave Toler a lazy glance, hoping to guage the man's reaction.

The guard and Rafferty stare out over the palasade to where the sounds of wolf howls and barks grow louder. Toler gives Boog a look, but doesn't respond to his comment. Rafferty and Toler sometimes look at each other.

After about a minute, the guard, whom you now have identified as Bill, shouts, "Here they are! Big ones! But don't worry, no wolf can jump over this wall."

Louie is able to confirm to Beamer that indeed several wolves have appeared outside the gate.

Banion is a bit more skeptical than Boog. What are the chances of Beamer conjuring up wolf noises so close to actual wolves that the real wolves could respond so quickly? Can't be large. Maybe Beamer gave some hostile conjuror the idea, and he created wolves for the ocasion?

Banion also considers his earlier concerns about Assassins, and Boog's rapidly discovering a plot to kill them involving Toler. Is it possible that something out there is somehow responding to them in some way?

If so, is it real or an illusion of some kind?

Perhaps he should start worrying about being accosted by a bevvy of beautiful and amorous halfling dancing girls...
