Sage Advice - multiclassing

The synopsis answer says "Multiclassing has been an integral part of previous editions and 4th Edition will have multiclassing, although we are not discussing the mechanics of it yet. Again, look to D&D Insider for more information on this aspect of the game at a later date."

Chris Perkins says, in the video, about the mechanics "they're still in heavy playtesting phase and do still need more work". I thought the PHB was done and out the door to the printers. Is there still time to change rules in the PHB (assuming multiclass rules appear in the PHB)? Or was the video made before the PHB went out?

Er, no. They've not said that. It's just gone for the first round of type-setting, layout and editing.

I'd have thought they'd have to be pretty close to a final draft by now? The release date isn't a million miles off?

It makes me wonder if multiclassing is something intended for 'PHB2: The revenge of Gnomes, Bardbarians and Druids'?

No, they have previously stressed that multiclassing in 3E was often detrimental (in particular for spellcasters) and that they are going to fix that.

The video was recorded some time ago (they were all recorded at the same time), and thus only speaks for what the position was a couple of months ago.

The PHB has been sent to typesetting, but minor details are still being playtested and are liable to change. If I recall correctly they have said that the major stuff is done, but some tweaking remains.

So, for all we know, multiclassing was finished months ago, and long before the books were even typeset.

I think those videos were filmed months ago. In the video answer to the previous question, Scott Rouse mentions "Races and Classes, which will be coming out in December."

To be honest, I can't see the value of having whizzy video answers to questions which were recorded so long ago that they can't give current answers (or in some case any answers) to the questions.

There is a time and a place when video answers can be a nice idea - but this stage in the launch of a new edition isn't really it IMO.

Cheers

Thanks for clarifying that for me, guys. :)
