Savage Species- is there something wrong with me!?

It seems to me that they want to talk about the book so much because they know it does not fit the needs of the general audience. 90% of GMs out there will never allow a player to use the book.

To me, it should have been bound in blue. It's decent as a GM reference, but horrible for players.

Is Savage Species overpowered? No, I really don't think so. In many ways, I think many of the character options are a bit weak for the price you pay for them.

Savage Species is not the most useful item I have received this year, but it does open up options for those who use them, and that AFAIAC, is a good thing. The presence of options does not force you to use them.

I already have their half-ogre in PCGen (and we already have a player playing one... and I have no problem with that.)

where? i too am contemplating an all-undersea campaign and was a bit miffed about the cutting of the aquatic template. i didn't see it in the web enhancement for SS. where did you find it?

I, on the other hand, picked up Savage Species and feel this book is indispensable. Granted, my campaign is set beneath the surface of the sea; standard PH races have to either be highly modified, or ignored completely, to fit into the game.

From my perspective, SS gives me ECL values for many aquatic races, new undersea weapons, PrCs, and templates. 3e stats for hippocampi, merrow, and scrag are revealed. And what's not to like about emancipated spawn? ;)

Yes, I would allow a PC to progress as a water elemental. After all, half-elementals, genasi, and elemental savants have already been detailed.

To top it all off, support from the book's authors has been phenomenal, on WotC boards. An aquatic template was cut for space, but was posted shortly after the book's release, by one of the authors. Nearly a thousand posts in ten days, over there. Clearly, folks want to talk about this book.
Emphasis added.

Aeolius is saying it is on the WotC boards.

I LOVE this book. I'm running an "escape from the zoo" all monsters one shot this evening with any luck and would love to do an emancipated spawn campaign. (journey of discovery of who you were while trying to clean up the mess left by your former master? cool!) And ANTHOPOMORPHIC ANIMALS!!!! yes!!!!

:D

I love funky stuff, so I'm all about this book. And I would allow just about anything in it as a DM just for the fun of seeing how it goes.

Wow. Savage Species is the best purchase I've made in a long time. It'll be an indispensable book in my arsenal. I've told my sister that she can't play an illithid for years because they're too damned powerful, but now that it's broken down into 15 levels, I'm going to let her play an immature one. I run very flexible campaigns, and let my PC's make, for the most part, what they want. This book saved me oodles of work. I just hope for future web supplements to contain more ECLs and monster classes.

"Savage Species-is there something wrong with me!?"

IANADOMHP*, but I don't know if using Savage Species as a diagnostic tool for your psychological wellbeing is such a good idea.

*I am not a doctor or mental health professional

Although I won't be using anything in there for a while, I am enjoying the book. Many of the "mundane" monsters aren't that hard to figure out either; most people would rather have help on the hard ones rather than the easy ones.

So are you saying that Flind and Wemic are NOT in the book?
That is disappointing news

hmm so exactly what monsters are NOT in SavSpecies?

Oddly enough, there are no rules or suggestions for reincarnated characters or awakened animals. The authors feel that animals are not "suitable" for PCs.... a very strange opinion, given everything else in the book.
