Save... OR DIE!

I recommend using Andy Collins's changes for Save or Die spells from this Epic Insights column:

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/ei/ei20030105a

A lot of these, I hear, have already been incorporated into D&D 3.5.

For myself, I really wish they would come up with some kind of mechanic in the RAW that would address the "Natural 1 always fails" thing. I feel like there should be a difference between a 10th level fighter saving against a DC 15 Fort save (always fails on a 1) and a 19th level raging barbarian rolling against the exact same save (always fails on a 1).

Use the DMG variant that treats a 1 as a -10 and a 20 as a 30, then. Also, only disentegrate works that way in 3eR, from my understanding.

Unless I'm playing an alignment that would allow my character to strip down a dead party member once they fell, I think it's really really tacky to do so. I would definitely bring it up with your next character - sort of have some sort of discussion about "what do we do when someone dies deal". Obviously a person playing a PC that has just died should not be able to whine about anything after they die - I mean, they are dead after all.

Save or die spells sucks but I think they are a hazard of being an adventurer - let's face it, there are some really powerful evil characters out there. If you keep provoking them eventually you are going to bite it.
