D&D 5E Save Your Campaign with the Tomb of Horror

How about if they include insta-death traps, but ALSO include ways to make them even .... deadlier?

Not just dead. Deader.

Not just a TPK. The whole party is killed, and the next party that you HAVEN'T EVEN ROLLED YET.

That's a TNPK, total next party kill, that's stuff that Gygax didn't even dare imagine!

My father-in-law forwards these right wing chain emails...you know the sort, "YOU MUST READ THIS" in the subject, body of the thing in an over-sized sans serif font, with some patriotic story of non-Americans getting the shaft...that invariably have some details in them that make you think, "This detail sounds invented." So every time I google the story (thank you, Snopes) and invariably the story, although starting from a grain of truth, has been altered to advance some kind of right-wing or religious agenda.

Yeah, so, basically that whole essay set off those same alarm bells. Starting with the 12 year old John Wick taking a punch to the face from a fellow gamer.

Perfectly valid sentiment (Tomb of Horrors sucking) but I call B.S. on just about everything else in it.

Well...the author is a game designer with enough credits for his own Wikipedia entry:

But believe what you want...

I had at least one friend at 12 years old that would have punched me in the face if I gloated about killing the whole party.

I had one friend in high school who saw his high level barbarian killed when he dealt roughly 250 points of damage to a low level draconian caster and I announced that he took 500 points of damage in return from its invisible fire shield, killing him. Then the dead draconian blew up and I called for him to make saving throws for his now unattended magic items. After an incredibly horrid set of rolls, including a natural 1 for his prize weapon, he lost nearly everything. I didn't find killing his character to be funny, but I couldn't keep a straight face over the circumstances. He leapt up from his chair with a familiar look I'd seen when he was about to beat the snot out of someone. If not for two other friends sitting next to him who reacted fast enough to grab him I'm certain a punch would be the least I got. Not all gamers are the frail geeks we see in the media. This friend was a massive amateur wrestler who happened to enjoy playing D&D.

Yeah, that's absolutely how kids I knew growing up would have acted too.

Especially my cousin, who is a few years older than me and was one of my first players. He'd punch me in the arm just because I was winning when we played Super Nintendo games against each other.

I'm sorry but this idea completely invalidates the adventuring mechanic. When there is no penalty for failure, the reward will be minuscule.
To be fair, as long as this Adventure Hook is only done ONCE as a novelty, you are not really taking the fear of death out of the game. Especially since, up to the moment of the first TPK, the players had no idea this was going to happen. And after the Tomb of Horrors is resolved, they have little reason to suspect that it will ever happen again. Especially if the DM says exactly that.

Besides, "Maiming And Other Dire Consequences" is usually a better option than a TPK. This is obviously a more comedic version of that, but just ONCE will probably be a positive for dramatically more groups than it would be a negative.

o_O

What happens if the party has no access Revivify or similar resurrection magic? Groundhog day works for the individual and if everyone dies. But what about say, a party of four, where half the members die? Do the survivors crack on, knowing they'll doom their friends to.. well, death, or are they forced to take more ..drastic measures?

''OH NO! We lost Graakak, our dim yet loyal barbarian muscle and Edgy, our sneaky assassin with a heart of gold. Now it's just the paladin (no name) and my fine ranger self!''

''Of course.. if we continue.. they'll remain dead. And really, we need their help so.. um..''

''OK. I'll do you then do me. Hand me that axe....''

O_o Terrifying..
