Say if I'm a paladin can I get a demon cohort?

But if I successfully change the demon's evil ways with a great diplomacy role...

CAn't be done on a single roll. And even so, he would still be type evil. So you'd have to change his alingment and get him to redeem. I think Exalted Deeds has stuff on that.

Wasn't there a way in Book of Exalted deeds to basically "reform" something evil and change it's alignment over time?

If you could shift it all of the way to neutral good...hmm.

Now, even if it had a change of life and thought better of its demonic ways, wouldn't it still be a Demon? Hmm...then maybe you could have a reformed Demon for a cohort.

Of course, it'd be much easier with a Devil, you only need to shift it's alignment one place from Lawful Evil to Lawful Neutral.

Interesting question...

I don't think things from aligned planes can be reformed ... IDHTBIFOM, but a good - or neutral - aligned demon is still of the [Evil] subtype, isn't it? I think the relevant example was a succubus, possibly in the BoED.

Or I'm totally wrong and have been awake for far too long.

All are possibilities.

You'd need an ally to cast a Sanctify the Wicked spell and willing to lose one character level as the sacrifice for casting the spell. and you'll also need a flawless diamond worth no less than 10k gold. After a year of introspection trapped in the diamond receptacle, the creature's body would reform and have the Sanctified template.

The spell and Template can be found in the Book of Exalted Deeds, pg. 106 and 186 respectively.

One of my players in an old campaign of mine (a paladin) reformed a kobold by strapping him to the front of his sheild while fighting an athac. I had no choice but to let him keep him.
