Say if I'm a paladin can I get a demon cohort?

So why do I have this image of a paladin running around with a few Helms of Opposite Alignment and seeing how they work on children o' the pit?

:p

A demon changing to good should become an entirely different being. Perhaps a "reformed" balor becomes an archon, and a fallen archon becomes a demon or devil.

It's interesting that people seem to feel that having fallen angels is more acceptable than having redeemed demons. I guess evil is that much more tempting than good.

Most likely due to scripture. Fallen angels can't be redeemed even if they wanted too, and in the end will face judgement with everyone else.

So in the OP it was more of a "what if" question, and where I can think of a couple extraordinary situations where it could be tried (nothing is impossible) I doubt very much any chance of success. Some very thoughtful answers from a few folks in here, much appreciated.

Why did your post conjure images of an electrocution chair, but with a helm of opposite alignment instead of electricity...

It reminds me of a Dr. Who episode, 3rd Dr / Jon Pertwee, called the Mind of Evil. In the episode the Master created a device that sucked all the evil out of someone. It stored the 'evil'....eventually the stored evil became aware....it became an alien parasite that feed on fear/evil. One of the first victims of the procedure, a prisoner at Stangmoor prison, had so much evil sucked out that he essential became either a Saint or Idiot...depending on how you looked at him.

Everytime I think of Ptolus and all the evil artifacts stored there I think of all the evil sucked out mens hearts and what that would create....

And perhaps an outsider who spends enough time in the "heavenly planes" becomes good-aligned after a time. Stranger cosmologies exist.

Hmmm. Suppose the heavens were populated by lawful good Nalfeshnees, Balors, Succubi, etc., while chaotic good devils populated Olympus. Archons, angels and evil were all evil and swarmed the lower planes.

That would be interesting. Even if it were not the campaign cosmology it would be neat to have a portal to a world where this state of affairs held.
