I tried, I really did, but couldn't do it. The dislike was just too strong. So, unlike the other thread, snarky comments ARE allowed. You just can't comment directly on someone else's post, or object to their statements, or argue about their opinion. It's not to have an edition war, but to allow for those who simply try, but can't really be so nice as the other thread wants you to be.
Here's what I almost posted but decided it didnt' fit, had to start another thread for it.
"To be clear, 3e is probably my most disliked of D&D...not snarky or hidden, just being clear. This isn't about 3.5, this is about the edition before it...or half edition, whatever you want to call it.
Things that were absolutely great, genius, and awesome about 3e
It gave birth to the OGL. Best...Idea...Ever.
Good things about 3e.
The original publication of the PHB made it possible to run the entire game out of the PHB, with Monsters and XP tables included.
It reinvigorated the hobby. RPG's were a fading, and it brought many back.
It appealed to many Rolemaster players who left D&D because they couldn't customize or do other things with their characters...as well as many others who hated AD&D, and D&D. It appealed to them, they finally had an edition that they felt justified their hate. AT the same time, at least at first, it kept the small but hard headed group that had stuck with D&D/AD&D from early on, even through the dearth of the dying years of TSR. In that sense, at least for a few months...IT UNIFIED the RPG community.
I don't think that's been done since the original D&D came out where everyone was on a similar page...and NEVER on the numbers and scale that 3e accomplished.
It allowed the NWN PC game to be made.
I had a REALLY hard time with coming up with these items to tell the truth. Hindsight has not been kind in my eyes towards 3e. I think in many ways I was like Gygax to a degree, dazzled at first, but then as time went on and I saw what it did with people's attitudes towards the original D&D and AD&D...it faded. Probably more to do with the people than the actual system, but it sort of left a bad feeling in the heart of it. Still, be nice to everyone, at least they are roleplaying...and RPG's were not doing so well prior to 3e. If it get's them playing, it's a positive thing.
As far as snarky...(Here's a snarky comment about 3e and the entire THAC0 and AC statements) It showed how many people flunked first grade math and subtraction."
Still, the best thing out of 3e was the OGL. That was the best thing ever, and not enough kudos can be given to those who allowed it. Believe it or not it almost WASN'T allowed, and if I had one person to thank I think it wouldn't be Peter Adkison (though much credit is given to him today on it), I'm more inclined to put it towards Ryan Dancey who pushed and pushed and wouldn't take no for an answer...
