SCAG Thread

Similar question with Background choices, if I chose a Background from SCAG, does that lock me out of the spells from EE?

And if so, what if I find them during an adventure? Can I purchase them later?

So, I'm sure my answer lies somewhere within this 22 Page post, but I'm lazy...

So, the question is...

Are the spells that are offered in either supplement book allowed no matter which book you chose for your origin?

Meaning, I play a character with the SCAG cantrip option of Booming Blade, can I still select EE spells as he levels, or are those in essence locked out of my character?

No if you choose "Booming Blade" you have excluded yourself from selecting any options from the EEPG for that character.

But since they are spells it is possible that you may find access to them via spellbooks and scrolls found in modules that would allow you to have access to them. But you can not just choose them since you chose the SCAG item. And that works vice versa...if you choose the EEPG spells you can not get any of the SCAG cantrips unless you find them in a spellbook or scroll in a module.

So, if I chose SCAG as my starting resource, I can't add spells from EEPC unless I "find" them during a module, via a spell book or scroll?

What about when I level, can one of the two spells that I learn as I level come from EEPC?

Can I purchase them in a EE module if there is a store that offers them?

No. When playing an EE character, you choose one of the two products (EEPC or SCAG) and add that product to your "Allowed Rules" list. The other product is forever barred to you. You cannot choose anything from it, even when leveling.

You can however, learn spells from the EEPC if you find them in a scroll or spellbook, or copy them from a fellow PCs spellbook (who chose EEPC instead of SCAG). As a result, EEPC spells will become increasingly more rare in the near future, as many players will choose to respec their EEPC spellcasters, removing those spells in favor of SCAG materials.

An article I wrote which was published today covers this issue, and I quote:

Advanced Logsheet Tutorial
Elemental Evil Characters and Character Rebuilding
When rebuilding your Elemental Evil character, pay close attention to spell selection and race choice. As stated in Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide and You!, Elemental Evil characters can only use options from either the Elemental Evil Player’s Companion/Princes of the Apocalypse or the Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide.

Wizards (and other characters) cannot therefore choose spells from the EEPC when leveling, while also using cantrips, races, ethnic languages, deities, domains, class options, or backgrounds from the Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide. They can however, learn such spells by copying them from a scroll or spellbook, or as an adventure reward in some adventures. While deep gnomes are available in both products, this unfortunately means that genasi and goliath characters can never take advantage of the options in the Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide.

Ahhhh... I see, well then, we must all band together to preserve these spells... luckily I have a fellow wizard in my party who is playing a Deep Gnome and does not want to respec into the SCAG material... so EEPC spells for me for life! lol

1st Sentence - Yes. This actually answers your question in 2nd and 3rd sentence.

2nd Sentence - No

3rd Sentence - No

There is one slight catch: In order to copy spells from another PCs spellbook, both characters must adventure together in the same adventure (even if only for a single session). At the end of the adventure/episode, you can then spend downtime to copy spells from their spellbook.

You would then need to adventure together for a second time to copy any new spells from their spellbook (that you were unable to copy last time for any reason; such as being too low level, or not having enough Downtime or GP). You would also need to adventure with them again if they learn any new spells that you wish to copy.

You don't really choose a book -- you choose a storyline season (Tyranny of Dragons, Elemental Evil, and Rage of Demons are the three options as I write this) as your story origin, and your allowed options depend on which season you choose.

As for the rest, the above answers should cover it.
