School Functions

Anyone else sick to death of 'em? I had to sit for four hours last night for my stepson's cross country banquet. All told, about 10 minutes of my time wasn't wasted.

These things are terribly run where I live - and it's an Excellent rated school system. I am forced to wonder exactly how prepared any child attending these facilities with these coaches and teachers will be. For example, doors opened at 6pm and dinner was served at 6:30. This happened on schedule. However, nothing else happened during this time. Sixty kids, their coaches and their families all made it through the line and then the dessert line before a word was said ... other than a blessing for the meal ... at a public school function ... but that's another topic altogether. Anyhoo, they waited until - and this is a real number - seven people were left standing in the dessert line before starting anything. Apparently we all had to be completely finished eating before they could begin. Nevermind I've been to weddings that didn't think it was a terrible idea to get started while people ate but whatever. Finally they began the ceremony.

Well, as I'm sure you're aware, every single kid had to win something so all 60 kids won at least one thing. They started with participation awards and they talked for 2-5 minutes about each and every kid they called up. Oh, by the way, these kids all moved like slugs to get to the coach. Runners moving so slowly ... argh. So yeah, they do that, they do letters and then they do special awards and then the 17 Seniors got to each do a speech ... with no guidance. Some were ok others were rambling messes of self-aggrandizement. It was pure hell and then, mercifully it was over - but not the ceremony. The coach informed us that we had to be out of the hall by 10pm. It was about 9:55. I was like 'awesome' but I was totes wrong. He then said he had a slideshow he wanted to present. 4 or 5 terrible songs played over what amounted to the same pictures being repeated over and over again. I mean, it's still pictures of distance runners. It's not exciting, they're not different. At the end, though, they did show some cool shots of the kids sitting together at events an' stuff. Still, the slideshow could have been cut to 5 mins easily ... or, if they had any brains in their head, it could have been put on a loop with the sound quieted (they decided to blare it at an ungodly volume for some reason) while we ate.

Anyhoo, the point here is that I needed 10 minutes of that but these educators are too dumb to get it. The kid got a participation award but he also won most improved (awesome). There were a few pics of him here and there and that was about it. 10 minutes is generous. I don't care about the other 59 kids and their parents don't care about him. We have jobs to go to in the morning and work at home that could have been done. This crap is so mismanaged it infuriates me. Like, I hope to god they don't pretend to teach anything like a project management course there. It's a shame that this is how our kids are taught these days. Meh, rant over.

And yeah, if you read all of that you probably hate me right now as much as I hated them last night. I get it. I just don't care. :p

Your fault for going. If parents stopped going to such useless functions, or left after they finished eating, the presentations would be changed to be much shorter and done while you ate. I bet you I could set up a short presentation for you and the other parents that would be at most 20 minutes long, and it would teach you how to modify the teachers' and coach's behaviors.

Hey man, married life brings with it this thing called eating your own bleep to satisfy the desires of the other person involved. I knew it would be awful, said I wasn't gonna go and then went. Awesome. Next year, though, I am definitely not going. I'll go again when he's a Senior. Stoopid showing support ...
