Tekumel

Tekumel: Empire of the Petal Throne will have a d20 appendix for Player's Use. Also the BESMd20 rules are already out so you can use them to add to the d20 appendix (and if you don't want to buy two books then just download the SRD for free at the Guardians of Order website. Joe said it is in final editing and will be ready soon.

If Tekumel was a rich vibrant shared world (which it is) then it makes the Forgotten Realms look like a comic strip (see above comment, not that I don't like to run FR games). The book will cover the basics of the game and as for source material go to

http://Tekumel.com

it also has links to Tita's House of games where you can get old Tekumel sourcebooks (vol. 2 of Swords and Sorcery game is all world information with very little rules). The world offers magic, intrigue, and science fiction all rolled into one. It is however, not exactly for the casual gamer. It has a whole, nonwestern society (okay several) with somewhat of a learning curve. But I do recommend it if you have people who can handle that kind of stuff.

Every setting I've read that mixed technology and magic is some sort of alternate earth. GURPS Technomancer is an alternate modern day world where magic came back in 1945. Castle Falkenstein takes place in an alternate Europe during the Age of Steam. I have not read Tekumel so I can't give an opinion on it.

If I were you I would buy BESM D20 or download the SRD. Then, buy a strategy guide and run a game in Spira. You said you liked Final Fantasy. I am playing Final Fantasy X-2 and its great. The Sphere Hunters might as well call themselves Adventurers because thats what they are. Parties of troubleshooters who fly all over the world collecting treasure and smacking down monsters.

for some reason, i thought the books were written in the 30s and 40s, but i see i was off by a couple of decades... ;)

Some of them might have been, near the end. ERB died in 1950 if I recall correctly.

Apparently only the first five books are at Project Gutenburg. Whether this means the rest haven't entered public domain yet, or that they haven't been coded up as text files yet I have no idea.
