Scorpion King: Verdict?

I saw it last night and it was utter, utter trash.

The Rock is not the worst actor in the movie: that dubious honour rests on the shoulders of the villain, Memnon, who is an insipid little weasel, not the sort of person who would have conquered the known world (or whatever it is that his character was supposed to have done). And hardly the sort of character that would command the loyalty of legions.

I wouldn't even necessarily wait for it to come to video.

i saw it on friday as well and, while i agree with Derulbaskul, on the bad casting and acting/directing jobs done with Memnon, i have to agree with pretty much everything Asmodeus said. it's good fun. not a bad way to blow 10 bucks. then again, i had lousy expectations going in. maybe that helped :)

I expected crap, and got crap. I had fun with some of the sillier stuff, but still, it's not even up to Kull the Conqueror's level. Oh well... sword and sorcery movies will have to take this stillbirth along with the big basket of goodies we're getting these days. It's still better seeing a really really crappy S&S movie than getting dragged along to a romantic comedy, in my opinion.

This movie would have been improved greatly with the presence of one monster scene. Just one large beastie.

I could have swallowed my own tongue when the guy next to me leaned over and said "Do you smell what the Scorpion King is cooking?", then laughed. Dear lord, even my dad rarely makes "jokes" that bad, rooted in STUPID STUPID STUPID.

Well still cannot figure if this rates a "Unleash Hell" verdict since while I though Gladiator was a good movie...I STILL don't get how they could give it an Oscar. So in that vein, give me Spiderman! :D

not that i need or want you to like what i like or anything, but that comment, to me, sounds like you're already too jaded to just sit back and enjoy somehing that has no other pretentions than humour. that doesn't really try to be anything else.

sometimes, i find myself in that role too. i demand more from stuff i watch. for example, a lot pf pleople i know and respect and even admire, watch and love South Park. i, on the other hand, wouldn't watch it if i was bored. so i get where you're coming from ... i think :)

and no, i'm not attacking you, just making an observation.

I just got back from seeing it. I really wanted to like it. I really did. Unfortunately, I don’t. The Mummy, and the Mummy Returns were at least good action/popcorn/ mindless entertainment movies. This, well, I’m not sure what this was. It just wasn’t good. It’s main problem: the script. The Rock didn’t put in a bad performance, they just had him do and say (mainly say) dumb things. Anyway hear is what I thought was good, bad, and in-between:

Good: The fight scenes, The cinematography (it was pretty to look at), The special effects, Every woman on the screen was gorgeous and scantily dressed :)

Bad: The script, The story, some of the acting

In-between: The comic relief, The directing, The rest of the acting

I guess I was expecting something a little more tied to the “Mummy” movies; instead I got a different story. That would have been all right if the story was any good, unfortunately it wasn’t.

On a 10 scale, I give it a 5.

I liked it.

But I swear this movie had the lamest comic relief I have seen in a while. Almost all of the shots and lines that were supposed to make me laugh made me groan instead.

Good fight scenes. The whole movie gave me the impression that they wanted to emulate the first Conan movie but that they ended up doing the second Conan movie by mistake.

On a positive note, I think that the Rock may have a good action movie career ahead of him.

Can you smell what the Rock is Cooking?

I can it smells like crap. This movie is just as good as you would think a huge freaking ego-maniac like "The Rock" would claim was the best movie ever. The Rock... wow kinda like Rock Cocaine? Can you smell what the Rock is cooking? The brain of anyone who watches this flick.

Just saw it.

No script or even story to speak of, no character development, a script that ranges from awful to moderately okay (although with a few good one-liners), and--on average--poor to mediocre acting.

You know what? I enjoyed the hell out of it. :)

This movie was 100% pure, unadulterated popcorn, with no pretentions to being anything else. It wasn't good, but it was fun. I enjoyed it, I laughed, I expected nothing else.

Don't go if you want even a slightly serious movie. If you don't mind the fact that it makes The Mummy look serious, and just expect to have fun, you might like it though.

I wasn't expecting much, and I wasn't dissappointed.

My gaming group went together to see it and I loved it. It felt like a D&D adventure. Fun, light, action-packed.

I enjoyed it. I laughed my <ahem> off and just enjoyed it for what it was, mindless escape.

I did think some of the reveals were too obvious (jewel pouch, sand "waterfall", etc.) the camera made some things a bit TOO obvious, they needed to give the audiance a bit more credit to notice things without being spoon fed them. The score also over-powered the movie at times. I believe that the score shouldn't be noticed, just should be there to add to the scene, not support it.

Other than that, good one-liners and wonderful facial expressions from the Rock. All in all an enjoyable movie, if you jsut take it as mindless candy and don't think too much about it (as there's not much to think about).
