Scorpion King: Verdict?

Well, I don't feel the least bit sorry about missing out now. I can wait for home video without feeling a bit of shame. FWIW, The Rock already has another action movie in the works. It's a buddy flick with one of the guys from Dude, Where's My Car? (which, by the way, is gearing up for a sequel: Seriously Dude, Where's My Car?) and some randon hot chick who's just a hair above working in porn in the female lead.

what's wrong with overly-critical people?

hmmm....
my wife and I just got back from seeing it, annd we hardly ever see movies when they first come out.

I agree with the people who say it's pure fun, and quite enjoyable to watch.

Everyone - DON'T listen to people who rely on the same criticisms of action and fantasy movies as always:
1) bad acting.
2) no plot.
3) special effects dominating over characters.

This movie is heads and shoulders above The Mummy Returns.

What more should you ask?

Dr. Midnight : this blows Kull the Conquerer away.
and i didn't mind Kull.
Hell, my wife and I are fairly push-overs when it comes to fantasy-type movies.

However, i'm VERY critical of plotlines making enough sense, and this one worked well enough for even me.

Maybe it's because i had just about NO expectations from the movie (not a WWF fan), but this has MANY cool action ideas that would be great to emulate in D&D.

BTW: as for the criticisms:
1) acting is seldom a problem for me. These people are professionals, and the delivery never broke the character or mood for me. What more do you want?
2) the story and plot were actually quite good, in my eyes. With few spots where the conveniences of the plot made me stop and say, "That wouldn't happen", but even when it did, it wasn't a problem swallowing.
3) almost no special effects in The Scorpion King. purely conventional, raider of the lost ark type effects film. However, as a person who likes almost all special effects, the 2 in this film were about the worst I've ever seen (the ants and the snakes)

I really don't know what people were looking for, but we snuck into 30 minutes of Blade 2 afterwards, and in comparison, The Scorpion King was EMINANTLY easier and more enjoyable to watch, even though Blade 2 seemed to have some cool spots.

It was ok, i'd say don't feak bad about waiting to rent it. I think they tried to make it a little to light, and the soundtrack really killed me. Most of the action sequences were good, the acting wasn't horrible. I was dissapointed with the plot it just didn't seem to fit with the mummy returns well. I have to addmit there were a couple of places were i expected them to do something completely stupid and they did somethign cool instead.

Over all unless you really want to go out to the movies just to get out, rent it. It's may not be worth going to the movies but it is defianately worth renting.

Oh, wow, did you hit the nail on the head with that observation!

If you take your movies (and yourself) too seriously, don't bother seeing it. Since I knew what I was paying for before I walked in, I enjoyed it a lot. It was good, comic-book style fun.

This movie is just as good as you would think a huge freaking ego-maniac like "The Rock" would claim was the best movie ever.

JLXC, I'm speechless.

The Rock, an egomaniac?

You do know the difference between fantasy and reality, right?

Or are you just making claims which you know nothing about?

Because, when it comes to professional wrestling, at least, the Rock is hands down the most unselfish main eventer the WWF has ever seen. He puts over everybody and their dog. Hell, he worked a program with Al Snow (who is good, but hadn't been pushed to be anything more than a dunce at the time). Whenever they want to get someone over, that person pins the Rock.

Egomaniac? Think before you speak.

Heh, funnily enough, I had a similar experience to what happened to Crothian. Originally the plan was that me and some of my (male) friends were gonna go see The Scorpion King, with my girlfriend coming along because she didn't have anything else to do. Well, what ended up happening was that the other guys saw SK, while my g/f and I ended up seeing Murder By Numbers. Well, at least it sounds like I didn't miss much. :p

Well I went and saw it last night with my girlfriend. Honestly its a really terrible movie, but we enjoyed it anyway. The one thing I'm still in disbelief about though is the cheeseyness of one of the props from the first (and worst) scene in the movie. For you people that saw it you know the clubs with the pop out jawbones that they last guy had, they looked like bullwinkles head.

[edit: Oh yeah, how could I forget. It was worth going just to see the Reign of Fire trailor on the big screen. I didn't know it was going to be showing in front of the scorpion king, and boy was I happily suprised.]

Gee I wasn't doing and A&E Biography of the Rock. I saw a dozen or more shows he has appeared on in the last few weeks, each one claiming that this movie was "The best fantasy flick ever" and such Tripe. This man wouldn't know a script if it didn't involve body slamming someone and I don't care what the loser has done in the past. The Rock, even his name is insulting when you realize it's a Drug reference. "Can you smell what the Rock is cooking?" Is his drug based catch phrase. I don't like the guy, I absolutely hate wresting, and I'm GLAD this movie was as bad as I knew it would be. So There. heh.

JLXC, you sound like a jackass. Try not to be insulting. We're trying to discuss The Scorpion King here and you're taking the typical "I hate pro wrestling stance." Pro wrestling is neither here nor there.

No one is asking you to do an A&E biography on Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. However, if you made an insultive and inaccurate statement regarding another person. DonAdam was merely pointing that out.

God, if I came on here saying that Piratecat was a jerk and impulsive based only on some threads I saw him close, don't you think that someone telling me that I was off base would be appropriate?

I understand that you don't care for wrestling, and that's your perogative. Please don't judge a person based solely on some appearances on talk shows. I mean, he is out plugging the movie. What did you expect him to say? "Don't go see the Scorpion King. It really sucks."

Drew

PS: Unless you are just trolling us, which I think you might be based on your silly "drug reference" line. In which case, I hope the Kwalish Legion infests your home, car, and place of business.
