I think it depends on the type of movie..
Scorpion King, Conan, and its like - yes, don't take them seriously.

But when these flicks (not movies) are the only thing to choose from, and the only "intellectual" entertainment in cinema is "the beautiful mind", I would be missing something.

B

It's all about understanding the concept of genre, something many professional reviewers aren't able to do.

And yes there does seem to be a serious lack of "intellectual" entertainment. I'm getting to the point where there should be two oscars for best picture. 1 is THE BEST PICTURE, which isn't handed out every year. The other is well we're not saying it was a good movie, but its the best that we saw this year.

I'm just happy that there is going to be a dude where's my car sequal, cause anti-intellectual movies rock.

Hi all! :)

just saw the movie and really enjoyed it (I was going to say it rocked; but I thought I would spare you that at least! ;) )!

Lots of action, lots of fun, no complaints at all! It did exactly what it set out to do - entertain!

Don't forget that he also uses a kama and throwing stars. You may also want to give him a level or two in ranger (or more), particularly as he fights two-handed. Adding to the ranger argument are his wilderness lore and animal empathy: the former because he knew the sandstorm was coming and how to deal with it, the latter in terms of his obvious deep respectful love and affection for his, um, camel. :)

I would also argue that he was probably using a monkey gripped falchion (dumb name- why not iron grip instead?) rather than a scimitar. Then again, I'm no expert of ancient/medieval weapons.

Good point, you forgot some stuff that I did. So, I quickly updated the stats. I gave Mathius two levels in Ranger and one more level in fighter. I picked animals as his favored enemy, even though humans would have been more accurate, but the 'evil' barrier got in the way again. :(

Mathius
Male human Ftr8/Rog3/Rgr2: CR 13; Medium-sized humanoid (human); HD 7d10+28 plus 3d6+12 plus 2d10+8; hp 113; Init +3; Spd 30 ft.; AC 15 (touch 13, flat-footed 12); Atk +15/+10/+5 melee (1d6+8/18-20, scimitar) or +14/+9/+4 ranged (1d8+6/X3, mighty composite longbow +4); SA Fight with two weapons, Sneak Attack 2d6; SQ Evasion, Uncanny Dodge (dex bonus to AC), traps, favored enemy (animals +1); AL N, SV Fort +13, Ref +8, Will +3; Str 18, Dex 16, Con 18, Int 11, Wis 11, Cha 17. Height 6 ft. 5 in.

Skills and Feats: Animal Empathy +2, Climb +11, Disguise +4, Handle Animal +5, Hide +6, Intimidate +4, Jump +5, Move Silently +5, Ride +7, Search +1, Spot +3, Swim +5, Use Rope +4, Wilderness Lore +3; Cleave, Combat Reflexes, Exotic Weapon Proficency (kama), Exotic Weapon Proficency (Shuriken), Improved Unarmed Strike, Point Blank Shot, Power Attack, Track, Weapon Focus (Mighty Composite Longbow +4), Weapon Focus (Scimitar), Weapon Specialization (Mighty Composite Longbow +4), Weapon Specialization (Scimitar).

Possessions: Scimitar, Mighty Composite Longbow +4, leather armor, several daggers and other assasination tools (kamas, shurikens, etc).

Now, as for the other characters in the movie:

Memnon, the villian, would be a high-level fighter with improved two-weapon fighting and arrow deflection.

Cassandra, the sorceress, is a diviner if I've ever seen one. I might give her a level in fighter, since she seemed to be able to handle a sword pretty well.

Balthazar, the tribal chieftan, would be a barbarian with a very high strength score. :)

No, that is definately a scimitar.

Amusing moment. Watching the movie last night, I realized
that I have the exact same scimitar that the Rock used. Same
handle and guard even...

Weird. ( Just proves those wrong that say they had a high
special effects budget. It only goes for $85 depending on
where you get it )

It was an okay action flick. I really liked the sandstorm and the fighting in the cave during the sandstrom.

However, I was hoping this would act as a prequal to the Mummy movies. How does the Scorpion King become the Scorpion thing he was in the Muumy Returns?

Also, last year weren't the trailers for this movie completely different from this movie? They seemed to indicate that it was a prequal and the Rock's character made a pact with some evil being to defeat the evil warlord.

It was an average episode of Xena, with the Rock substituting for Lucy Lawless. If you enjoyed Xena, you'll probably like this. If you didn't, you won't.

And you definitely need to turn off that part of your brain that analyzes a film for historical accuracy.

I'm pretty sure that there is going to be a Scorpian King 2. I just got back from seeing the movie. It was awsome! The only thing I thought was a little out of place was the arrow knocking the guy out the window. And the fact that that the bad guy made Flaming Scimitars without magic. I've put a knife in a very hot fire before. Metal does not light on fire!

ya, that totally threw me too! i thought this would be about the Scorpion King's horrible exile and him building his army to take over and then being consumed by the darkside... *sniff cry*

however, it was still damn cool.

damn writers probably did this so they could make a Scorpion King 2 and suck more money out of us. hehe.

I think they didn't want a movie were the Rock lost. He was obviously cursed in some way to become that scorpion thing and I'm not sure his fan based (who the movie was aimed at) would have wanted that.
