A return to the farm results in a long day in the saddle. The weary Hounds ride into the city well after dark. Upon being questioned about any news, the guards there inform you that a party of Church Knights waited at the gates for several hours without explanation, but that they finally retired. There is much speculation as to why the Knights were there, but no hard answers.
The streets are quiet as you make your way into the heart of the city. A few heads resplendent in night caps poke from windows as the noise of a large troop of horses wakes more than one citizen. Only the most serious revelers and a few church knights tasked with keeping order are to be seen on the streets.
There is little activity at the Palace as well though you are greeted by the ever vigilant Palace Guard. Taking the south gate into the oldest part of the Palace you deposit the horses at the Hounds wing of the stables and then make your way to the tower. One of the four pillars of the Old Keep, the Hounds' tower is now on an isolated edge of the Palace grounds. The King has moved to a new section added to the north end. The only consolation is that the Hounds' Tower is close to the kitchen and so the Hounds often get their food hotter and fresher than the King himself. The tower is somewhat dreary as the Captain keeps the use of lamps to a minimum to save money. Only the upper most windows where Hounds stand vigil over the Thrice Turned Horn are well lit.
Each Hound must take turns standing watch over the Horn to keep it safe and ready should the King have need of it in a crisis. In truth none have blown the horn in generations, but a brace of Hounds stands ready at all times to defend the Horn from attack and to bring it to the King if summoned.
As you enter the Captain sits going over ledgers by the light of single candle despite the late hour. Really more early the next day than late at this point. He closes the book and stands. His harsh one-eyed gaze fixes you as you enter. "Trouble on the rode?" he asks slurring his words somewhat owing to old wounds that disfigure his face.

"Not trouble in the sense that we were in trouble," Tabitha says with a yawn. "Orcs assaulted a roadside tavern, and we cleaned the little monsters out. Even saved the owners, no less."
A mischievous smile curled her lips then, and she added, "A few knights of the church stopped by after it was all over and tried to through their weight around. Their bravado didn't last long in the face of real courage though. We sent them packing, tails curled between their legs. I heard they were loitering around waiting to cause trouble for us this very evening."

"That was all last year, Sir. We have been good since then." Ali says with a grin and a wink. "Today was clearing out orcs from a tavern about 3 hours ride from the city. We had to return to the farm for the papers for the horses since the Church Knights who came across us accused us of riding stolen horses, due to their fresh brands." Ali sighs.

Tabitha shakes her head. "There's an innkeeper and his wife who'll vouch that our 'drunken brawl' was with very UNdrunk orcs who would have killed them and robbed them of all their possessions. As for the horse thieving, they made some snide remarks but backed down when dared to back them up."
She sighs. "We went and got papers anyway, just to make sure they could only embarrass themselves if they decided to push it any farther. There'll be no scandal over it."
