Scribing Scrolls

A replay from Wizards

While I am certainly in camp 1 myself this is the responce I received from Wizards:

My question is this. Can you create one scroll in one day with more than one spell on it as long it is doesn't exceed 1000 GP in price?

No.

For example:

1 scroll of :

Cure Light Wounds (1st level caster) 12.5 GP 1 XP
Bull's Strength (3rd level caster) 75 GP 6XP
Wieldskill (1st level caster) 12.5 GP 1XP

would cost 100 GP 8 XP and only take 1 day to scribe as it is one scroll and under 1000 GP.

Is this correct? Or is it 1spell per scroll per day. Thanks.

No, it would take a minimum of one day for each spell scroll.
Though your DM is certainly allowed to rule otherwise.

I am curious as well, since it speaks directly to my issue. If I can tell my players it came from The Sage or another authoritative WotC source, they are less likely to argue with me. I have enough of that as it is :)

At the risk of hijacking your thread even more than I was already, sorry to hear it didn't work out for you with the xp system. I did say that it wasn't for everybody.

Out of curiousity, for whatever period that you tried it out, how did the party fare xp-wise compared to what they would have gotten under the normal system? I'm always intrigued by that comparison.

I will also lodge a very mild, "shame on them" for not wanting to perform the (minimal) extra bookeeping if that is their only reason for not liking the system. I'm guessing they don't DM much if that's their attitude.

No prob with the hijacking, Rel. A lot of the displeasure with the xp system came from the fact my players felt as if I were "grading" them . There were some clear cases of "padding" -- claiming use of skills, abilites, or rping just to put them on the xp sheet even if they did not contribute to the game. Plus, there was the aforementioned lack of recordkeeping on the part of some players. Since they have no problem with me just handing out xp at my discression (I just glance at the what the DMG suggests), I concluded that they just didn't want to fill out the sheets.

Hmm. . . It's okay to hijack the thread you started, right?

Note that they said "one day for each spell scroll." They might have misunderstood the question.

Oh yeah. Well, that certainly changes things, seeing as how the question wasn't actually answered. Let me guess...Patrick is the one that replied? :D

Yes it was Patrick. Does that mean something I'm not aware of. I thought the example I gave them:

My question is this. Can you create one scroll in one day with more than one spell on it as long it is doesn't exceed 1000 GP in price?

Was pretty straight forward and he answered no. I personally think this sucks and think the 100GP per day limit is cool as long as you can cast the spell and have the $.

Was pretty straight forward and he answered no.

He answered that it takes one day for a "spell scroll".

But we know, from the DMG miscellaneous tables, that "spell scrolls" with more than one spell exist.

Assuming, of course, that a "spell scroll" is the spell completion item commonly known as a "scroll".

But aside from that, he's from Customer Service, so as a general rule, take the opposite of what he says and it's probably correct.

Figured as much.

There are times when he can be about as helpful to a man on fire as a bucket of gasoline. I.E., not at all, for the slow ones out there. ;) I don't mean to bash on him in anything but a playful way, but I've found him less than helpful or useful more than half the times I've emailed him. You guys think the Sage pulled rulings out of thin air? Hah!

Your question was, and his answer was, but unfortunately, Patrick didn't answer your question.
