Scroll Scribing time

Greetings!

I know this has been covered before, but I can't find the thread.

I've checked the player's guide and the DM's guide, as well as the FAQ on this, and I can't find anything.

Scribing a scroll takes 1 day for every 1000 GP in the cost. This, I understand.

Somewhere, though I remember that the MINIMUM time needed to make a scroll is still 1 day. I can't find this statement anywhere in the rules though. I've played a lot of spellcasters, but I've never been much of a scroll maker, and my players aren't very big on forging any magical items themselves, so I haven't run into scroll creation much as a DM.

My understanding is that I can only create a maximum of 1 scroll per day, and scribing that scroll takes me ALL day, even if it's only a level 1 scroll at 1st caster level.

DMG, page 245

"Scribing a scroll requires 1 day per each 1,000 gp value of the completed scroll."

and page 242 "with a minimum of 1 day."

And the controvery lied within the question: Can you put more than one spell on the scroll?

Otherwise than that, yes, if you scribe a "detect magic" scroll, it takes you all day.

I don't think there's a hard ruling on this, but many people (myself included) play that you can create a single scroll with multiple spells on it in a single day as long as the price doesn't exceed 1kgp. Scrolls with multiple spells on them are often found in "official" treasures, yet are still considered a single scroll.

Don't get any funny ideas about perforating them so you can tear off a piece toilet-paper style and hand them out to your friends. Tear a scroll and you've got just that- toilet paper. With very expensive ink on it. Not too unlike wiping with silk.

Zhure, thanks for the page references! I love how they split up useful information like that! *sigh*

Anyways... I am at a loss at to whether or not I'd allow multiple spells per scroll to be scribed in one day. I remember a lot of people debating this... and the fact that there is no maximum for the amount of spells that are allowed on a scroll.

I'm not the DM this time around... so I'll ask my DM what he thinks. I'm not sure how I'd go in this situation.

In the one sense, I think wizards are screwed enough by how long it takes them to scribe spells into their spellbook, and they don't need ANOTHER day-long task like scribing scrolls. Maybe this is because in our campaigns, we tend to not have very much downtime.

On the other hand, I get the feeling I'd be skirting the rules by allowing multiple spells per scroll... namely because the instructions for scribing such scrolls are notably absent.

You're welcome, we live to serve.

Regarding mutliple spells on scrolls and scribing time, my interpretation is 1 scroll of any number of scrolls, with a total scribing time of one day per 1000 gp final price. It seems to work for me.

I handle scribing a scroll differently.
A wizard can only write one scroll per day.
You can not write more than one spell on a scroll, but I reduced the writing time of a scroll to 0,5 hour / spell caster level of the scroll.

Just my 2 cents
