Scroll Writing Question?

My current house rule (because I can't figure out the correct rules) is that it is one scroll per day up to 1000 gp... If it cost over that, it counts as another day per 1000.

I do allow multiple scrolls per day to be written, but only if they don't go over 100 gp per day... So essentially you can write a few low level ones per day....

I just want to know what the "correct" rule is so I can either use it or opt for a house ruling, right now my scroll makers are complaining about the feat...

You can scribe as many spells as you want onto a scroll, subject to whatever makes sense to you, and it takes one day per 1000 gp value of the completed scroll.

OK, where did you find that rule?

I just need to be able to show and interpret to my players correctly!

As I say in my previous post, I believe the rules support
a maximum of six spells scribed in one day on one (long)
scroll.

The key is to understand the definition of a "scroll" which I
would take from the DMG as opposed to the SRD.

BTW: I could not find any treasure table which had more
than one spell on a scroll. But, the DMG and released
3e modules make it clear you can have more than one spell
on one scroll. I feel limiting a scroll to six feet (six spells)
is practical. This means a maximum of six spells scribed on
a single (un-taped as it were..) long sheet of vellum wrapped
around two bars - unfurl similar to a window shade (or more
accurately, a scroll).

To comment on Rel's post above, I would rule that a scroll is indeed a single item, regardless of how many spells have been scribed on it. Tearing a scroll would destroy it, and would not be a convenient way to share multiple scribed spells.

Of course, you can also rule that a scroll, being a single-use spell-completion item, contains only one spell.

DMG, page 245,

"Scribing a scroll requires one day per each 1000 gp value of the completed scroll."

This implies one scroll ("a" and "scroll" not "scrolls"), but you can have multiple spells on one scroll.

Greg

I see this as implying that a scroll is a singular magical item and that you can heave as many spells as you want on it...

I was implying that the word 'scroll' could interchangeably mean 'a single spell on parchment'.

Therefore, each additional 'spell' added to the original is an additional 'scroll' and thereby an additional magical item.

If you follow that, then each individual 'spell/scroll' is subject to the one magical item per day you can create...

IMCs we, like most who have replied, allow up to 1kgp worth of spells to be placed into a single scroll in a day. We haven't addressed the possibility of tearing the scroll into other scrolls, but I'd say it'd destroy the item.

I'm thinking of extending this interpretation into a house rule in the game I'm DM'ing to allow multiple items to be crafted during a "session", as long as that session isn't interrupted per the existing rules- just add the collective costs together to determine the time it takes. I might restrict it to the items all must require the same item creation feat- otherwise you would need the extra time to shift gears.

So essentially we have come up with:

You can write as many spells on a scroll as you want up to 1000 gp in value a day...

and as a house rule:

Only 6 spells on a scroll.

So esentially 6 spells on one scroll up to 1000 gp per day...

Where do you go for "official answers," the Sage?

Is that function of Wizards still operating?

Why? You're the DM, what you say is reality, IYC. So make what you feel best with.

Personally, I'd allow more than one scroll per day, if the total market price doesn't exceed 1000gp. I would limit the number, though. Maybe one per caster level per day, or maybe even one per key ability bonus.

But working on an item that costs 1/40 of the limit the whole day doesn't seem right to me.
