Sean Reynolds Let Go

What is exactly is going on here? Greenspan says the recession is over, everyone at Wizards keeps going on and on about how financially successful D&D is, yet we've got all these cuts going on. Is this related to losses in CCGs I wonder, and general cost cutting measures to soak up that damage? Too bad Hasbro doesn't have to report subsidiary financials separately...

You said it. I've known about Sean's plans for a long time, but it doesn't change the fact that I'm bummed. While WotC may be losing a designer, one of my really good FRIENDS is moving away.

That sucks.
 

I cannot understand.
I know companies like having their 'secrets' out of their clients ears, but it's very bizarre. Why all those layoff in WotC since last year? Why do they lay off the guys who created D&D 3e? It seems D&D 3e sells well, very well, so why almost all its authors are out WotC today? Why?
 

Someone at WotC (cant say who, thats not fair) back a long time ago whe Butler left and Monte Left, that certain folks (they did not say who) took the hit for the rest of the people in the R&D. I have bumped into Sean a couple of times and spoken with him and it seems to me that he is the sort to do that. He has plans that don't include WotC, and should he continue to write he can do what Monte does and pretty much stay afloat. I would like to think that he is taking one for the team. Mainly because it is convenient as he was going to leave anyway.

And that is somthing that I think is a good thing for people in prestigious game design positions to do anyways. If these guys sat on thier jobs for a long time, noone else would ever get a chance to be a game designer for WotC.

Also, Hasbro would fight tooth and nail to keep D&D. The product is a proven name, every edition outsells all other RPGs, it is 20 years old and starting to take its place next to other hasbro properties such as clue, monopoly and others. They won't put their name on it, but Hasbro has a pretty impressive toy box, and I think they want to keep D&D in it.

*a few facts*

According to the Hasbro webpage, 100 million people play Yahtzee regularly, and that's just one of their many extremely popular games. They sell 50 million copies of the Yahtzee game a year.

How many people play role-playing games regularly? How many Player's Handbooks have been sold so far?

Why in the world should Hasbro care a bit about Dungeons and Dragons? Its fans only represent a tiniest fraction of its customers.

Simple. The hard work is done. 3e is out, and the volume of material published is going to slack off some.

Have you seen the list of people they have laid off? (it's a rethoric question, I know most of you have seen it)

Since D&D release, most of the creators are out!
I don't think that's a normal bussiness strategy for a (modestly) succesful product. They lay off the brains of D&D 3e, and laying off brains never does anything good.
