Sean Reynolds rant about terminology

1. I call it pop, though my college roommate was a Texan who called everything Coke. So I'd always ask him for a Pepsi Coke:D

2. Further off topic--It's a bubbler, and not a water fountain.;)

Yep, I've heard about the Coke thing. Orange Coke, Root Beer Coke, etc... That scares me. From my understanding you can generally find that in the southeast part of the US. Everything is Coke there. Hmm, I wonder if there was some sort of brain washing going on there...

Yes, agreed. It is a bubbler. A water fountain is found in a mail or garden shooting water into the air!

We call 'em "drinking fountains" around here.

My relatives from Texas have got the whole "coke" problem...

SKReynolds: "...but good lord pay attention to what you're writing and at least proofread it!"

That is hysterical coming from someone who works at WotC.

I live in western North Carolina, and although I can't deny the brainwashing (this is the state where a state legislator advised teens to scrub their genitals with Lysol after sex), I can say I rarely hear folks calling non-Coke products "Coke". "Soft Drink" is the most common phrase, followed by soda. Never "pop".

Re: seanboy

Oh -- I'd forgotten about his wacky political ideas when I said that I'd agreed with all his previous rants. Make that all his previous game-related rants.

Now, as long as he doesn't get together with a certain state legislator.... ;)

After re-reading SK's rant, I have to say that one simple modification would have probably made his point more effective.

He makes the point that there is a difference between "there is a large orc" and "there is a Large orc" (because of the obvious Game Mechanic word involved).

Wouldn't there also be a difference between and "enchanted" person and an "Enchanted" person? Simply capitalizing Game Mechanic terms would make the difference.

Remeber kids: Seanboy may or may not be a language facist, but he certainly is a political one. Check this out: http://www.seankreynolds.com/misc/rant.html The level of evil in this document has convinced me to never buy anything with Sean's name on it.

That was one of the funniest reads I've had and most of my friends thought it was hysterical too :D. Did you even read this:

"This page is a pipe dream. It could never happen. For it to work fairly it would require me to be omnicient (knowing, for example, that a person about to be executed was really guilty of the crime in question, or knowing that a particular mentally ill person could never be cured and would spend the rest of his life in a drugged coma so he wouldn't be a danger to himself or others).

In any case, if you disagree with what I have to say, fine, but don't write me about it. I didn't post this for discussion. And if you're going to write me just to call me a nazi, well, piss off. (For the curious, I have had quite a few people email me and say some really rude things, which is why I added that last sentence.)"

Likewise with his rants page:

"This part of my site is ... well, basically, this is where I bash and pick apart stupid arguments that I hear about D&D and gaming in general. I have a few in the hopper already, and I'll probably add more over time. Enjoy.

Oh, and if you are one of the adherents to one of the opinions I bash ... well, tough. You can try to convince me otherwise, but unless you can make a really good point, you're not going to be able to do it."

What's really offending about this. If you go to Sean K. Reynolds page you'd better be prepared to be offended!!! Let it be said that I love the man's work and respect his great knowledge of the rules. I don't really think Sean K. Reynolds has any problems as some of you are insinuating and I don't think he's a fascist either when all comes to all. Don't read to much into this. If I had to write how I'd run the world if I was omniscient and omnipotent, a lot of people would be calling me a fascist too..... (they'd probably call me a corporate technocrat instead - but what? :D)

Couldn't resist picking out a few of his issues in the totalitarian rant. It's usually difficult to understand Danish humour because it's - well - evil. This one made me fall of the chair the first time I read it:

"Criminal Strike Force
The Criminal Strike Force is a military team of convicted criminals. Given basic weapons training, identification markings, enough drugs to make them ignore pain for a while, a drug that kills them after 48 hours, and out-sof-date weapons with limited ammo, then give them suicide missions where they can harm our enemies and not hurt any civillians.
Reasoning: These guys are going to die anyway. Drop them into some place like Saddam Hussein's palace and let them act out their violent tendencies. Even if they don't kill the bastard, they do a lot of damage, and we lose people we wanted to get rid of anyway."

This is just to grotesque not to be hilarious! But really haven't we all thought a thought like this once in a while? Or am I just inherently evil :D

And these two I completely agree with and if people would like to call me a fascist because of that - go ahead - be my guest:

Reasoning: You kill someone, you deserve to die. You try to kill someone, you deserve to die. You torture someone, you deserve to die. Anything else, you should be given time to regret what you did and learn to do something productive with your life. Throw away that chance, it's your stupid loss.

(...again - problem with the death penalty is you can't be sure you get the real guy - but we are omniscient in this example, remember?)

"Reasoning: I'd kill every rapist with my own hands if I could. With no regrets. And I'm a pacifist."

Well said IMO. I feel the same way. But there's a long way from feeling this kind of resentment and disgust to actually acting upon it. And I'm NOT a pacifist ;)
